Leland's Lure can't keep getting away with it! Someone in the tackle industry is going to take them out!. They sell basic ass dirt cheap lures that somehow outfish the expensive stuff. Tried out their spinner which cost a whopping $2.30 absolutely slayed the creek: largemouth, sunfish, creek chub, etc. No treble to worry about either.

I fear I have outgrown bassfishing. There is so much more fun to be had. Catfish, the redfin Roundup, saltwater, panfish. Basscels can't compete

But fr tho, I'm wondering how long before I pivot my obsession back to bass... Might be a while, this catfish thing is fun as hell and filling my freezer while also helping protect the redbreast sunfish population that has been so decimated by the flathead catfish here. If you live down South black bass fishing seems pretty fun. You have LMB, SMB, and spotted and then all the cool lesser known endemic basses. Up here in the North it's mostly just LMB that are pressured all to hell. Really only have fun hunting for spots that nobody knows about that hold bass and when I catch them in the main fishing areas usually as bycatch.

Salted bait is the best for keeping bait you don't use. Just be sure to use non iodine salt. For some odd reason they don't like that, maybe too concentrated?

Anyone know anything about fly fishing for lake trout from the shore? I have a 8wt with intermate sinking shooting head line. Thinking I'll just huck meaty streamers around dropoffs. I'm not allowed to wade in this reservoir so it might be hard getting the distance I need.

Hit the water just before sunset and fish where you suspect they might be moving in to feed, like where a creek enters the reservoir.

If he was saying he was fishing Superior, sure, but I've caught Lakers in 20 feet of water less than 200 feet from shore in mid October in the BWCA using crankbaits. Not any HAWGs, but decent eaters.

Not a cast I could make with a fly rod, but maybe he's a fly casting stud?

I'm not sure what depth I need to get to but it drops off pretty hard and these fish will come into the shallows to chase smelt. I caught one laker last fall on my ultralight about 60-100ft off the bank so that's what I'm aiming for. I'm pretty shit at casting but it's not to hard to get distance with the shooting head line. I'll try fishing near stream inlets at sundown. Thanks!

Early spring and fall is the best time for lake trout on the fly. They are up shallow and you can catch them near shore. Overcast, rain, and wind in the fall seems to push them closer to shore in my experience. That sex dungeon is a perfect choice, a white Sluggo or a 5" white game changer are other solid choices. Don't forget to Roly-poly retrieve, good luck.

Same. I did it hard for 5 years and even did some southeast tourney tours and just can't get back into it. I enjoy chasing big gar and catfish these days. It's mostly the thrill of the catch and the hike there. I fucking love it.

I've had very weird luck with salted bait, sometimes you tip a spoon with it and your outfishing all your buddies, other times you can see the fish take the long way around it. I usually have some with me because I'm cheap and can't bring myself to throw out tiny dead fish, and they're easy to transport so I say give them a try.

if you're worried about the mercury and chemicals than 1 or 2 cats per year wont kill you. the chems build up in the head, skin, belly meat and fat so trim that off, toss out the belly meat, remove the skin and only eat the fillets.

Thanks, pretty much all I did was cut the blank, drill a hole for the hook, wrap it in tuna cord and use some of my marine epoxy on it.

I just used the mustad premade hook, the angle probably just looks off due to how I'm holding it. I don't remember, but I don't think I can claim credit for that turkshead, I think it came on it. Though I have tied a few on my other jig sticks.

I'm kinda nervous though, I'm going offshore on the San Diego again on Monday and they got skunked yesterday and only 7 yellowtail today.

Is Piscifun good? It's chink shit right? Bought a Kastking baitcaster it was total trash. There was some friction on the spool and it wouldn't let out line and it was retrieving unevenly. A one off issue doesn't make or break a brand. Van Staal, Visser, Penn, Daiwa, etc can all have issues as well. I don't really get going with the online-only chinese brands if the price is already close to the offerings of established brands though. For example the Kast King Zephyr is like the cheapest BFS reel you can buy so it makes sense, but if it was priced similar to a Shimano why bother?

They all have better quality control so the likelyhood of that happening is a lot lower. You order some chinese shit it's not even worth paying the returning shipment fee. Pay double the price for some brand name you get something quality and can be pretty sure it works.

i think its because more newer hooks end up being bend out or lost before sharpening becomes an issue but it still improves is, the whole "chemically sharpened" is pretty much a meme, although Berkely does it okay

It depends how cold you get in the water. Here in San Diego the water temp is in the mid to upper 60s according to the surf report, which is plenty doable in a spring surf suit. If you don't have freedive experience then you probably aren't going to be diving deep enough where snorkeling gear is going to hold you back. The priceyist thing is going to be a good dive light, because if you aren't going in the dark or at least at dusk it's going to be a waste of time if you don't have the breath hold to really root around deep in a hole, and even in the middle of the day you'd need it to see into holes. Get a 50' length of floating poly rope with some kind of buoy on the end and tie a glow stick to it and tie the rope to your dive light/gauge, it's a zoo out there early in lobster season. Don't try to take shorts either, lobster season seems to be the only time of year that fish and game come out.

To kind of add on to this, I think your best bet as a beginner is shallow reefs at sundown, preferably an hour or so before the top of the tide. Boats can't get in there and scuba divers are too cumbersome to hang out in the swell. Another trick is to dive with a float line like I said and have a weight on the end, that way if you find a good hole and don't have enough time to reach the bugs you can drop the weight at the hole to mark it and then dive on the line to find it again. Some basic freedive safety stuff too, you really shouldn't dive alone, especially at night. I've been diving for like 7 years and I still wouldn't dive alone at night. Also if you can splurge for a cheap dive watch you should time your intervals between dives, aim for 2 minutes between drops. When I started doing that I was blown away by how much better my bottom times got. Even of you "feel" ok after 30 seconds you will start getting contractions way sooner than if you waited. And carry a second lobster gauge, it is required to have one, so even if you have a monster bug and you lost your gauge you can still get a ticket.

Thanks anon, I'll look into these things. Never messed with ocean or diving stuff before so this is all new. I know you're allowed to use hoop nets for baiting lobster but I imagined the shore spots where you can would be packed to fuck all. Yeah that's where I get my info besides talking to folks on the res. I've been checking this years thread and skimmed the threads from the last few years. yes and no. i use a cheap eagle claw #2 hook that i liberated a package of from walmart as a sacrificial shank (i cut it off at the bend about 1/8 inch back from the the end of the fly) but there's no reason i couldn't tie it on a good hook and leave it there.

100% situational; get your lures unstuck from a few rocks and the hooks could probably do with a touch up. i've encountered everything from the very tip of the hook snapping off, to the very tip bending, to the tip just getting rounded over dragging flies over rocks. when im swinging flies for steelhead almost all the snags are rocks and i check the hook after every snag because i've lost plenty of fish to damaged hooks that didn't give me good penetration

Bearing on chinkshit reel is a meme. It's the cheapest way to "pad" a reel to trick uninformed customers and I have no respect for any company that does it. Stuffing multiple bearing on the handle so you can have x number of bearings on the box? That's straight up scummy practice. Down the line, that just mess up the reel more because if just one of the bearing fail, it is worse than having no bearing there at all.

I've replaced a lot of the old phenolic shims with PTFE. They wear faster but offer a smoother flow.
The felts I have issues with. Seems the "felt" you find at a lot of hobby shops is synthetic, not wool. You can also find nice brass and steel bellville springs at older mom&pop hardware stores.

Yes and no, Bushings tend to be self lubricating, made of a sintered bronze alloy, or of a self lubricating synthetic or composite, and should require no further lubrication for the "lifetime" of the application.
A plain bearing, like what one finds in an engine, while made of similar alloys requires external lubrication/regular lube intervals.

I've just found that I get skunked waaay more often on freshwater than i do on saltwater. If you go saltwater fishing, you're going to catch fish. No question. The hard part is presenting your bait or lure in the right environment that it attracts the species you are targeting.

Freshwater fish seem so picky. Plus, and this is just my opinion, salt water fish are better to eat.

The couple old timers there were flicking the guts out of these little fish, and eating them raw, crunching away happily between swigs of Asahi..
I tried it. Not for me, way too salty and crunchy.

That being said, I'd put fried smelt up against a lot of what seafood I had in Japan. Tough to beat that sweet buttery flavor.

I grew up fishing on the Great Lakes. "Salmon Cheeks" were a big deal, if it was your first of the season. But you had to work to catch the plants or Steelhead.

We also had loads of bass, pike, carp, perch, etc. As the tourism ramped up through the 80's and later, the fishing got worse.

Now I live in Kentucky. The waters are smaller, but the fishing is a lot more fun. Every little ditch is full of life.

They say the St. John is a bass goldmine but I've never had any luck there at all. Sure hope it does. I'm hoping that if this covid shit every dies down that a lot of the people will go back to NY and CA and we can have the state back. It really is a great state for fishing and outdoors. I'm just nervous about how much land is being destroyed for condos and neighborhoods. There's still a fair ammount of woods left, but part of what makes Florida so beautiful, in my opinion, is just how different it is from the rest of the country. If these developers just keep building it's all just going to look like puerto rico soon.

Heavily pressured bass can get very picky. It's not finesse like a picky crappie or walleye bite, where even after they take your bait, you've gotta be imperceptible to the fish if you ever want to set a hook, but your presentation has to be finesse.

What kind of size are you looking at jigging for. The meatstick is nice, but so is the Mojo, but honestly, my favorite heavy weight ice rod is one I made from a blank I bought from Mudhole. Ice rods are a great way to get started on rod building.

you can just rip them to whatever size you want. I usually just use the floating trout worm which is the same thing without the bulb/egg at the end. You can fish them any way you could fish real worms. Since they are buoyant if you use a big enough piece with a normal hook it will stay suspended off the bottom. With a jig head it will slow the fall and give you great action.

I am not exaggerating when I say you can use them as a real worm replacement. I have caught sunfish, bass, perch, catfish, crappie, and more using them. They also don't make any sort of mess since they powerbait oil forumula (gulp is the liquid).

Yeah I cast flies that size on a 2 weight, but not very far. You'll probably want a 6 weight with something called a shooting head on it. Don't expect much more than 100 feet from any fly rod, and less with a head wind.

Dont listen to boomers or forum junkies when it comes to fly rod and line weights, listen to the manufacturers. Rod companies and line companies are often owned by the same holding companies (ex. Rio and Sage owned by Far Banks, Orvis owns Orvis and Scientific Anglers). This means an 8wt rod is designed and tested with an 8wt line from their sister companies. Rod manufacturers often give line recommendations on their website. So if you buy a 7wt for mackerel buy a 7wt line, preferably a shooting head style line like Rio Outbound short, SA Sonar Titan, or Airflo 40+ Sniper. In Canada people use 7 or 8wt fly rods for mackerel because of the wind.

If you really dont want to buy special leaders you could just use a spool of regular 8 pound mono to tie what's called a furled leader and then use the same 8 pound mono for a tippet.
Tippet isn't entirely needed, it's the last 18-36 inches of leader and the thinnest part. Every time you cut and review a fly that tippey gets shorter, and you will eventually either have to replace the leader or tie on more tippet. If you want to make your own leaders, get a spool of 20 pound mono, 15 pound mono, 10 pound mono, and 6 pound mono. Take 3 feet of 20 pound mono, tie a loop in one end, and tie 2 feet of 15 pound to the other end. You can play with making different parts longer or shorter to make the leader stiffer or softer

No it wont be overkill, I use 8wt Rio Pike/Musky floating (shorter and more aggressive taper then 40+) and can cast a size 8 dragon fly pattern for smallmouth to 70ft no problem. Light lines cant carry big flies but heavy lines can carry small flies. The presentation wont be the best but you're fishing streamers so it wont be a problem. Redfish lines have a similar taper to the 40+ and cast size 4 flies perfectly. I recommended those lines since you're probably fishing a colder climate and casting far.

unfortunately that rod broke but i replaced it with a similar one and if i need to euro nymph all i do it put on a 14 foot (maybe even up to 16 foot) euronymph leader. an exrtra foot of rod gets you a foot and a half, maybe two of effective presentation range.

Are there any other links besides OP's links for getting started in fishing? 15 years ago I'd use google to find things but other than the absolute basics like how to tie knots, most of the shit is sponsored links with websites ultimately trying to sell me bullshit and I don't want to go to reddit. Any good youtube channels would also be helpful. I haven't gone fishing since I would go with my dad when I was a kid so basically starting from scratch and just been using nightcrawlers with a bobber on a basic spinning rig. Only other gear I have are basic lures recommended to me by the ~70 year old employee at cabelas doing his best to help get me started but desu I don't even think I'm properly using them. In the Raleigh, NC area, so far my only catches have been sunfish but I'd like to try for bass

Prep materials over a trashcan, trim butt ends and tag ends before letting go. Those won't keep all the fur and hair and feathers flawless but they will greatly reduce mess leftover after. I personally just use the drawer of my tying desk as a trashcan because then I can almost let the hair fly anywhere and I can just sweep it in to the trash drawer when I'm done.

Small world... anyways, there are TONS of good bass spots around, most people just won't tell where they are. you must understand, once you tell people places will get overfished to death, and idiots will leave trash everywhere. People even tresspass on private ponds and fuck the place up. There used to be lots of places that allowed people to fish, then they ruined the privelege. lots of those areas are closed to the public now. first off, Falls lake jas LOTS of good spots despite being fished like crazy, but you gotta get to them on foot and get deep in the woods. most people aren't willing to do that so you can find some good spots that way. same with ponds and other places.... just exploring in the woods using maps along the neuse river(as long as you don't wander onto private property) you can find some flood runoff ponds. In Wendell/Zebulon you can fish the Little River. some parts of it are DEAD but others have some good fish in it. A ton of the best fishing spots in our area are private ponds, so getting to know someone can help big time. In my experience is easier to find if bass are in a body of water by first targeting small ones with insects or small lures. they're just more likely to bite and some areas have mostly small bass anyways. If you aren't bass-centric, our area has a TON of BIG sunfish. you can catch them just about anywhere in the 1pound or larger range if you're lucky. Try to go out and explore public areas after we get a lot of rain.

Perfect day for this post... there's been 2.5+ inches of rain since I went to bed last night. What would be good to use after heavy rain like this and the temp cooling down? I've read using lighter lures and fishing off the bottom works well when it's cooler temps but not sure if a surface lure would work better or worse due to the rain.

Anyone else like panfishing the most? I'm always deciding to leave my bass/big species rod at home when I go fishing instead of carrying two rods. I grab the light rod and go 9/10 times. Fish eyesight is a complex topic that is not completely understood. It probably helps for tuna but for bass and bluegill probably doesn't make a difference. Also consider that for low lb strength fluro is really cheap so for making leaders it will last you a long forever, you don't need the special leader bullshit, a cheap $10 spool works.

I see most of the good sinkers don't come lower than 1 oz size: pyramid, coin, no roll, hatteras, tongue, etc. Drop shot weight and split shot don't hold bottom for shit, which I suppose is fine if you are wiggling soft plastics around but its not what you want for fishing bait. Well they say fluro leader line becomes "invisible" in water because it got the same light-refraction as water. My fishing buddy always uses braid+ 3 feet fluro leader and thinks it's weird that I just tie everything directly to my mono main line, because "the fish can see it", but I don't think he has more success doing it his way than I do, I just think it's too convoluded setting it up and retie if it gets snagged.

Honestly, I only tie flouro onto heavy braid because of abrasion, visibility, and so I only lose the last 10 feet or so of line if it breaks. Also, it gives me a huge choice for line diameters/weights. For example, I use a 20 pound braid and I could very easily tie on 4, 6, 8,10 pound flouro, and so on without the leader being heavier than the braid.

You can use anything you want, if your braided line is not slipping on the spool it's doing it's job. You can use some sort of tape or any nylon line.

That actually looks more like a fallfish. You need to look at the dorsal fin though, if there is a black spot its a chub, if there isnt its a fallfish.

Creek chub also tend be brown and have an easy to see lateral line.

I feel like my hook gets lost more often when I don't use a floro leader. Also I'm able to break mono line with my teeth pretty easily but floro takes some real effort.
