Has anyone here ever climbed Mt. Rainier? I've hiked all the most difficult trails my state (Arkansas) has to offer. Those mountains are puny compared to the Rockies, and I find myself wanting to push myself further. I want to go for glory and start true mountaineering. Mt. Rainier seems to be most people's first mountain climb, and I'm planning to climb it within five years. What advice can /out/ give a relatively clueless but ambitious anon?

Have you climbed it anon? This thread has got me researching this mountain, and the website I'm reading is telling me to climb Mt. Baker as a starter climb to prepare for Rainier. I guess it's more difficult than I originally anticipated, but I'm up for the challenge.

Rainier is easy. Mostly a put your head down and grind type of thing. Not nearly as technical or dangerous as Baker.

Rainier and Baker are both heavily glaciated mountains. The basic routes on both mountains are easy from a technical standpoint, but both involve a significant amount of glacial travel and navigating many crevasses, making them inherently much more dangerous than a standard hike on a non-glaciated peak.

No just hiking/camping/hunting experience. Hoping my regular lifting and intense cardio has prepared me for it. I’ve read a lot about mountaineering and watched a lot of vids. Using a guide service should mean im good to go.

Have you even hiked a mountain much less mountaineer a mountain? You should probably get some safety courses, gear, and experience. The Ozarks will not prepare you for a 14er like Baker/Rainer

There are relatively cheap guide climbs on Baker and Rainer or in the Serrias/Alaska that include glacier traversing/safety, fall arresting, general mountaineering tips, etc. If you want to get into mountaineering, that’s the place to start if you don’t have anyone to teach you the ropes

Do not, I repeat DO NOT just 'solo' a glacier thinking you will be fine. You will die. Take a course if you do not have crevasse rescue and traversing experience, or find someone who does who is benevolent enough to teach you. It can literally all be luck that you make it or not. I.e., snow bridge collapse, heat opens up crevasse too much stranding you, etc. Experienced people die plenty.

You should try Borah Peak in Idaho first. No technical skills needed but very challenging. Also Mt Adams in the summer is a good chance to try some easier mountaineering. I’ve done it in just hiking boots but krampons and ice axe would have made it much easier during the descent. I grew up just north of you in Missouri. Make sure you leave your meth at home.

I crossed a few glaciers on my own when I was young and full of piss and vinegar and bad ideas. In Alaska I took a step and post holed up to my thigh and when I looked down into the hole all I could hear was rushing water and all I could see was blackness. Haven’t set foot on a glacier since.
