I don't mind trails. It's always been trailed but like a small dirt trail going in every direction. Now they cut the trees in between the trails and chopped a big one to make it a landmark and also added this dumb thin where if you sit in it you can hear the birds or something. They completely ruined everything.

I never understood this logic assuming you are not impaired in some way. I think it is a lot scarier walking places at all hours of the day, in all weather, just to try and make it. I used to ride my bike/walk everywhere into my early 20s because I was poor in college and I nearly got hit by cars on a weekly basis. My first car was $1200 and I drove it for 8 years. First summer I could work I bought it and never looked back. I also store a lot of my /out/ gear in it which is comfy so I am always ready for an adventure away from people.

Not OP but when I was learning to drive and even now after years of experience, the idea of hitting something or someone and then having to pay ridiculous amounts of money to fix things is what scares me the most about automobile ownership. I'm probably blowing it out of proportion mentally, but it's kept me from getting even a single parking ticket so far. And if it's a reasonable distance then I'd still rather walk anywhere over driving.

I feel the same way. I got my license at 18, but I didn't buy a car till I was 24 because the maintenance costs are fucked. One of my friends crashed his car the other day and the repair ended up being like $12,000.

You dont even need to insure it. A 2nd hand car that cheap you're better off just wrecking it and buying another if you crash it.
You're probably a yank too, which means petrol is dirt fucking cheap there, so no excuses.

Getting your license is easy as piss, especially if you do it in the country.
Most country town police will just make you do a quick lap of the main street for your "driving test".

It is far harder to pass the exam in a rural area than an urban one. Rural testers are hard asses that will make you perform maneuvers you will never need. Urban testers are just trying to get a paycheck and they have so many people to test in any given day that they can't be fucking bothered to care to really test you.

in the country, they dont even have traffic lights or roundabouts.
at best they'll make you drive down the main street, maybe out to the highway and back. 15min tops and no maneuvers.
