Yeah, I'm one of the mass posters. That brookie was from the swift river so its genetic may have been polluted by stockers. Some natives have nicer colors like picrel I caught last spring.

I fished the bayside of the cape on the incoming tide this morning, the water was pretty murky and rough. I could only get hits on plugs, a couple strikes on wood and some dink bass landed on a chicken scratch bomber.

Anyone else like targeting smaller species, with intent to catch rare BVLLs? It's just more fun and rewarding that targeting big species to me. You never know when you might catch something that's near a state record. I caught a green sunfish once that is bigger than a lot of state records. Thought I had a 5 lb largemouth when it smokes my lure. I really want to catch some massive creek chubs, I never realized how big they can get until I saw some on YouTube. Anyone else ever caught a GIGA specimen of a common panfish?

I only 'just' started fishing quite recently and I have a baby question:

How do I know if I haven't been patient enough vs I'm just not in a spot with fish and should move to a different spot? How do you determine when to move? (I'm shore fishing lakes and ponds)
Furthermore; if I'm using an ol' fashioned worm on a hook and a bobber to what extent will they come to me? I'm basically asking the, "how do I find the fish?" question.

Canada, British Columbia/Vancouver Island.
The areas I've been scouting have Trout (wild, not stocked), Bass (small & large mouth if it makes a difference), Peamouth Chub, and Pumpkinseed. I'm not looking for any big trophy fish, I'd be perfectly content catching nothing but dinks and oversized minnows so long as I was catching them.

If you're sticking to one spot it might be a good idea to throw in small pieces of bait to attract the fish and keep them there, otherwise it's probably best to move along to the next likely looking spot if you haven't had a bite for 10-15 minutes

Just float fish with maggots, sive 18 or 20 hook, and loose feed a pinch of maggots at the same time, you'll catch something, plus it's easy to move about, there's a technique we use here in the sunny UK, search stalking for chub on YouTube and adapt it to your region.

That's a nice trout! Fatter than the natives I've been catching. I've been fishing the quini too, as well as the stillwater. Gonna check if the salmon are running next week in the still. I've been meaning to make it out to the Westfield for a while but plans keep falling apart. Tight lines bro!

Now that fall is here, what are the best rigs and places to fish bass with the cooler temps? Weather here as has been in mid 40s at night and mid 70s during day. I'm a new fisher who is fishing shores and piers, still haven't caught my first bass but I've mainly been trying to fish some very small public pond nearby that lists bass as in the area but I've yet to see any big fish except for a koi that somehow got put in there. Intuition is telling me basic texas rig or dropshot will work, just have to work them a lot slower because of the cooler water.

it highly depends on the species of fish. When I have fished in clear water before I have seen fish zoom over 40 ft to investigate after my float hit the water and bait started to sink. If you are just blind casting there is no reason to work a spot longer than 5 to 10 minutes.

Any amazon tackle kits you anons recommend for a beginner?
I currently have a few bobbers, 3 small hooks that I keep losing, 100 tiny ball weights you crimp on, and 2 different types of fake fish/shrimp bait. I fish salt and fresh.

Or should tackle kits be avoided? It seems like for their price it's hard to go wrong.

What if I don't know what I need?
At the store there's hundreds of different hooks, weights, bait/lure things and they all range from $5-$15 each for just a handful of them. I just want a few general essentials so I can catch ANYTHING

bruh, fishing is a tactics game. If you're fishing for large mouth bass then you use bass tactics. If you're fishing for gag grouper then you'd use gag grouper tactics. Identify the fish you want to target and buy your tackle accordingly.
Environment plays a role, too. Heavy current? sinkers. Heavy current near structure? sinkers depending on target. what you are fishing for and where you're fishing for it should be your criteria for finding tackle.

Are there stocked trout ponds near you? If so, put two powerbait eggs on a size 10 hook and put a sinker about 18" from the hook. The eggs will float above the bottom and they look like hatchery pellets and the fish will eat them without any hesitation. You can get the powerbait floating worms too and catch fish with those. This is maybe the easiest and most sure way to start catching fish. You'll get bored with it eventually, but by then you'll have some experience and the confidence to branch out into other methods. Also, when you go fishing, pay attention to what the fisherman who are catching fish are doing. If the fish are biting pink spinners or baits that day, then use pink.

yea get some floats, crappy-jigs, spoons, 1/4 oz egg sinkers, maybe 1/2 oz, some 100lb barrel swivels, and some red beads to put between the egg sinker and the swivel. Throw some 4,2,0 and 1/0,2/0,3/0 circle hooks in the mix, some 20 lb fluorocarbon leader material, and a pair of needl-nose pliers. Put cut/live shrimp on the bottom and cast artificials while you watch your bottom-rod(s).

Ask other fishermen that you see in your area. Thats what I did, it was awkward at first and probably annoyed a few people but now i know a bunch of them by name and we all share/gift lures or sinkers or whatever.

How bad are carp?
I really want to try deep fried whole carp like they do in germany but I think they farm their carp mostly, would wild carp really be all that worse tasting?
Also are they a difficult fish to catch?

Noob question, I try to use artificials, but the pinfish/other schools of small fish rip apart the tails, sometimes within the first few casts. Is there any way to avoid that? I'm using various gulp lures - I'm not sure if they're uniquely fragile or if the area I'm fishing just isn't good for soft plastics. It's so frustrating to lose the plastic on the first cast when they're fairly pricey.

carp will eat a variety of baits but supposedly they have good eyesight and are skittish
when I target them I use corn on a Carolina rigged bait hook, then cover the hook in a homemade pack bait. Casting out a new pack bait every few minutes
gets the area chummed up. I also make sure I’m set up far away from the water so they don’t see me.
Once the bite gets going they tend to keep biting in my experience, but the lake I fish is overpopulated with carp which makes them aggressive feeders. Your local population may vary.

I think they are somewhat easy to catch as long as you are patient and keep your presentation still, and keep chumming the area either directly or through packbait (a legal loophole if you’re in an area that forbids chumming).
they’re fun to fight, too

I personally use rubber corn or boilies tied on a hair rig. Gives a better presentation. Also using a feeder cage/coil dramatically increases your chance of attracting the fish to your bait.

It just means the fish is pulling drag. That's a non issue on a baitcaster, but don't reel through drag on a spinning reel.

Schoolie city today, I was hoping for some bluefish but no such luck. I ended up taking off the belly treble and crushing the barb down on the siwash to facilitate quicker releases, I noticed a few missed strikes but I would often get another hit that retrieve so it wasn't a big deal

You're pond fishing, so a worm or a cricket(even fake worms and crickets) should get you a bite in literally a couple of minutes if something is there. insects are good pond fishing bait because it's what the fish are feeding on 75% of the time, especially ponds with lots of overgrown vegetation along the bank. for lakes... certain spots are money and some are DEAD, mostly due to overfishing and boat traffic. stumps, logs, vegetation, rock, and other structure is what you are gonna want to cast near in lakes.

It doesn't have to do with the drag and doesn't damage anything. It has to do with how line lays on a spinning reel's spool. It can cause it to cross in weird ways on the spool which can cause hangups when the fish runs and can twist the line which increases the chance of wind knots. I don't remember exactly, but it was articulated to me well enough 9nce that I just remember not to do it.

I would worry more about the line rating on your rod and reel than a distance capacity. They know what they are doing and if you follow the guidelines you will never have to worry about it. Where you start to get into trouble is if you start putting big diameter line on setups that weren't intended for it, they will cast like shit and be prone to tangles.

Yeah I just looked up my line diameters. The reel rated at 8lb(0.23mm)/10lb(0.25mm)/12lb(0.28mm). The 8lb copolymer I have is 0.28mm and the 12lb mono 0.35mm. So the copolymer went on.

At least get a light salt water spinning reel on a 7ft rod w/ 15lb test line, or braid and a medium saltwater spinning reel on a 7ft rod rated for 25lb test and use 25lb test line, or braid. A collapsible rope net is nice for hauling fatties up. Conventional reels are a go-to as well if you're comfortable with such.

Warmwater species will go on a feeding frenzy bulking up for winter. And once the water goes below 50F they stop eating, by low 40's extremely hard to catch anything. Coldwater species do the same but with lower temps,can stick it out longer until the bitter cold of mid winter.

In deep water fish can suspend (which is why ice fishing is possible). In shallow water fish will hide or migrate and be practically impossible to catch.

can confirm that's the way to go. i cant speak for west coast, but fishing the east coast from surf and piers i had one rod that was 7' long with a 2500 size spinning reel and bright yellow #20 braid. sometimes i'd colour the last 10 feet or so of line black with a sharpie, and that'd usually last a few weeks before i had to colour more line. i supplimented that with a heavy fiberglass surf rod with a bunch of high vis #20 mono. bait the "light" rod with a small hook (#4 or smaller) and just a little bait to catch a dink right by the pilings, then put it on a fish finder (carolina) rig with a 5/0 circle hook and 4+ ounces of weight, huck it in a trough, and wait.

theres something strange going on with zander in a lake nearby and id appreciate if someone who knows zander/fish behavior can give their thoughts on this.
so, ive been getting into zander fishing in the last month or so and one crucial element for success has been depth charts. in my city, this is the only proper water that has depths beyond 5 meters, and there is only one spot really where you can reach the depth from the bank, see pic related. so i ended up giving it a try, and what I noticed was something very strange. I was walking along the bank with my flashlight and noticed that there are a lot of zander just sitting there near the bank. shallow. under light. the moment you approach them with the flashlight they swim away into the depth, and when you come back like 15 minutes later you can find them there again. see pic, red spots are approx where zander would be, with accurate density. this is actually really strange, because zander shouldnt show this behaviour, UNLESS they're spawning. its being said that they instead go to light and shallow places when they're spawning, while normally seeking solely shadows and depth(gradients). so, does this explain their behaviour? can they be spawning now? its not spawning season at all..

I'm actually making a Cane Pole (because I can't find one to purchase in Canada) out of a 6ft piece of bamboo and have a couple questions:
-I'm worried 6ft of pole might not be long enough. Is it?
-I was thinking of just using normal 3-5ft test fishing line, but should I actually use fly fishing line instead?
-Any advice on specific lures/bait would be appreciated. I just intended on using a very small jighook with a worm/maggot or maybe a wet fly.

I intend on using it for creeks too small and awkward for spinning rod & reel (maybe even do some micro-fishing) and those short pools that form in low rivers. Just something I can mindlessly use to target bait fish and smol trout.

It's not hard to judge a bass's weight just by length alone, if we knew how long his rod handle was, we'd have a rough estimate. With girth measurement, you'd have a dead on estimate.

6 foot is definately on the short end. As for wgeatger or not to fly line, do you want to tenkara fish or not?
I usually set my poles up with line 75-80% the length of the rod for use with straight mono. I'd say your best bet is to just send it and report back.

I recommend 4lb test although you can go higher since you don't need to worry about casting. 6 ft is also way to short for trout unless you plan on hiding in a bush or something. You can also just use a normal rod and tie off to the end. Walmart should have either straight up cane poles or a suitable cheap rod for under $20.

Spent the weekend walleye fishing. My friend lost a 50"+ Muskie just a few inches from shore, it went on a tear and snapped the line on a sharp rock. It would have been the biggest fish he ever caught and his first Muskie, and he is pretty much suicidal about it. Completely ruined the trip. I tell him you can't expect to land a fish like that when using such light tackle, but he is hearing none of it.

Hard sided coolers seem to keep things colder than soft sided ones. Other than that the colder temperatures will just be from adding more ice / ice packs, so bigger is better provided that you load it up. The more expensive coolers are either just status symbols or rugged enough that people use them as seats / stand on them.

The scales are much thicker and hold to the skin more stronger than they do on Zanders.
You can flour them, but I usually just fry them as they are and eat them with fried potatoes and cottage cheese like the dirty Eastern European I am.

I usually fish for them in harbours and tidal channels where casting distance isn't really an issue, although they do come in close as the tide floods the beaches sometimes so they're easily catchable if it's calm. Finding them is the hard part but once you have located them I find them to be pretty obliging. Small grubs and paddletails usually do the trick

Anyone surf fish with lighter power rods? What are some good options without getting into the retardedly expensive shit? Under $150 for example? I see the Okuma Rockaway SP and like the specs, but it seems a little on the short side compared to most surf rods. I like the idea of a surf rod that is about the same feel as a medium power bass rod at the max. even a medium light might feel good. throwing stuff no heavier than 1oz max, often under that, is the idea.

Right now all my salt fishing is done throwing light jigs, spoons, and smaller live bait rigs from bass rods. Find what people fish for in your area. I don't know where you are but if you're anywhere in the US there will be bass and panfish in every stream and pond you can find. There's nothing wrong with using live bait when you're learning, that's how everyone starts out. Once you get confident with a hook and bobber move on to different rigs like a drop shot or carolina rig, then onto soft plastics etc etc.

I don't know a lot about salt but if you're near a coastal city there's probably a bait shop that will give you advice better than anything you read here because they know about that specific area

I use an 8'6" sst for corbina, not for the casting distance, but so you can try to hold the line above the breaking waves. Corbina are hard to get the hookset and the waves make it hard to feel your line.

Here in San Diego I try to fish when there's a higher tidal coefficient, it usually contributes to more tidal movement which is beneficial for several species around here. I usually go when the swell is smaller with longer intervals since it is beach launches for us. Speed wise I troll minnows and deep divers around 2.5-5 mph, but that's on a hobie so idk how sustainable that would be on a paddle kayak. Just a point of advice though, if you can afford it a pedal kayak with a fish finder makes ocean kayak fishing 10x more enjoyable in my opinion.

That said the waters pretty cold in December, I doubt they'll be around that time of year. Im south of there so I could be wrong though, but by then they're usually in their winter patterns.

im assuming my experience in fishing in nc will somewhat transfer over, and a surf rod is suprisingly managable on a pier and helps you pull bigger fish away from pilings better. get a 9 or 10 foot spinning set up if you mostly want to keep going with lures, get a 10-12 foot conventional set up if you're more interested in soaking bait and either way spool it with a few hundred yards of high vis 50 pound braid and a shock leader of 65-80 pound mono long enough to go from a few wraps around your spool to several feet in to the water (for normal surf fishing i usually reccomend 3 rod lengths but on a pier its nice to be able to muscle fish around with 80 pound line, locked out drag, and a finger on the spool and know you can really horse them away from pilings)
for lures, just put a tactical angler clip on the end and send it, cut/re tie whenever you feel its needed; for live bait use a fish finder rig with a 4/0-7/0 circle hook and plenty of weight.

NZfag here, I landed in burgerland a few days ago. Went on a fishing trip yesterday with a friend looking for bass. I will now proceed to laugh at every burger who thinks they are hot shit by catching bass. Which is fine, I'm not knocking bass fishing in general, but a lot of "bass guys" make into something that it's not. I'm the same way when it comes to fishing, I'm always active, but I think some of that has to do with me not drinking. The only time I ever fish bait is off the sportboats where it's not as passive as regular chunk baiting.

Yes and no... you can easily catch 20 bass a day with little effort... but they will be young small bass, under 5lbs. The big ones are way more picky about what they bite. Usually relies on finesse baits on the right day, right weather, right spot. Also, depending on where you were fishing, some bodies of water are just easier. Especially small low-traffic ponds. I don't specifically target bass because it's pretty easy where I fish at... but then again I have yet to catch a really big one. I prefer fishing for much more aggressive fish that like to hit anything and everything. a 5lb bass is a nice surprise though when you're using your ultralight rod with 4-6lb mono and are expecting a panfish though.
