Too big and heavy for my needs.
My trusty SAK is on its last legs, the springs are weak so the blade wobbles easily, the washers? move around freely and the scales are disintegrating on the sides but I'm still debating whether getting a locking SAK, which would be more useful for EDC, or buying myself a small fixed knoife.

I will never be without a SAK. For me, it's the Climber - the one with scissors and a corkscrew. I also carry a small benchmade folder for regular cutting, because I like to reserve the SAK blades for first aid and food cutting.

I've been thinking about getting a Buck 110 for a few weeks now, it's just such an outdated design, but it reminds me of my Dad's ol' Puma "Cadet" plus just such an iconic knife

I like my mora, but I can never get it as sharp as my SAK, the little blade is especially sharp. probably get a opinel next, a dedicated food slicer, opinel + apples is kino; I really want a paragon warlock though, and a neck knife, a mini rope knife would be handy, a boot knife would be cool too, maybe for baton-ing wood... throwing knives too sure why not
can't ever have too many knives, only too many shit ones

If someone else is kinda curious, I looked into it.
And I was kinda right, as usual for Mikov they have a shitty 420 version.
But there's also a N690 version and a carbon steel version (with a coated blade), weirdly they seem to only sell the N690 version as just the knife without a sheath.

I bought one for $35 at Walmart the other day. It's not bad for that price, passable QC and I like the grind on it. It's kind of a brick but I don't mind it in a jeans pocket. I'm sure I'll go back to carrying my more modern-style knives once the novelty has worn off but I don't regret buying it.

(Also, idk what's up with the edge in the photo but it doesn't look like that IRL, the sharpening job seems fine. Maybe some residue or something on the blade affecting the way light reflects off of it.)

I've had a Kershaw Barge for ages and love it. Perfect blade profile and size for utility use, acceptably hard steel, solid construction, and a pry bar on the end of the handle. Only issue I've had was a spot of rust on the lock when I accidentally left it out in dew.

You can easily get a proper handle after all that's all a skeletonized knife is, a normal knife that has no handle scales.

I have filed down the inner side of the nail file so I can use it as a striker for firesteel.
The phillips screwdriver fits in a lot of different sized screws. Even big ones.
I use the scissors to cut my nail.

Been using a micra for years, absolutely love it. I attached one of those flat can openers to it.
Technically more /diy/ territory since I don't really use it outdoors except to cut cord or tape. But I've used it for everything from cutting my hair to fixing a car.

Yes. At 5 layers it's actually very comfy. All the tools have very narrow/slim profiles, so they hardly take space. The Ranger is not bad at all as far as thickness goes. It's the most tools in the least amount of space.

No name multi tools are almost exclusively trash. Only exceptions being mods of Leatherman and SAK or simple multi tools.

Here is the thing for anything labeled with "Made in 1st world country": labor cost and QC. At least that's their main excuse. Material cost wise it's pretty damn cheap, maybe about 20 bucks of materials and machine cost is basically peanuts to them as Leatherman annual revenue is 85 mils and they only got 339 employees.

QC and competency aren't cheap when it comes to tools unless the marginal cost allows it.

My only experience with (((leatherman))) was the supertool 300 I bought a couple years ago. Upon using it a few times I sent it back to amazon. The handles were flimsy as shit and couldn't handle a bit of force with bending slightly, plus the pliers tip didn't properly align. Fuck that garbage.
I'm better carrying a pair of cobras and a knife.

Not him, but have you checked out Sog multi tools? I find their pliers to be way better than leatherman, most of the other tools they come with are pretty decent, the price tag is pretty solid on most of them.

For me it's mostly for food prep desu, I like to carry one but if you're just going for a day hike, mtb ride or birdwatching you don't really need one, if you hunt, do bushcraft or like to sit against that old oak tree whittling spoons then sure you need a knife.

Honestly fellas, Leatherman multitools are all pretty great. I got a cheap one a couple years back, and its probably one of the best investments ive made in years. Their are downsides, the pliers aren’t really good, so forgoing those for completely dedicated scissors is pretty genius. And the knife itself is pretty useless. But i’ll be damned if the file blunt end hasn’t helped me open countless vents and hatches.

the profile looks pretty good. The most common issue I see with DIY handles is leaving them way too thick and blocky, so make sure you get it thin enough to be comfortable to hold in a few positions, and give it a healthy amount of oil. I've seen people soak handles in boiled linseed oil for a few days to get really good penetration into the wood.

I think it would look better thinner too, but its very comfy rn and I think thinning it down more would ruin that. Its currently getting the first of 2 coats of linseed oil, I avoided soaking though, as I didnt want the wood to swell.

Leatherman ones I suggest removing the hook and just sharpen the hell out of it into a hawksbill type knife. Good for opening boxes, cutting cord, and whittling wood. The SAK and Gerber ones would be more gut hook like though you'd only be able to really turn them into box and cord cutters.

If I'm looking for a double-edged knife, about 7-9 inches in length, should I look at a Fairbairn–Sykes or something else?
I'm hoping to get something made with very high quality, even if it costs extra. I've heard good things about Damascus steel.

Any suggestions or tips? I currently have a 6" knife I got from a stall in Pakistan, its very sharp and curved but only single edged and I want something better for slipping in and out.

F-S dagger has a fragile tip and doesnt really cut well, having no belly. Maybe you should look for a dagger with wider blade, that will be more robust and versatile. Perhaps something like smatchet. CS made simple and inexpensive daggers/smatchets in two sizes, smaller called Shanghai Shadow and bigger called Shanghai Warrior. Quite decent for the money, bigger one had better steel. Both are very robust as daggers go, should work better innawoods than Fairbrain Sykes.
