Maybe it applies more for urban areas, but avoid anything with fresh trash. Probably there are bums nearby then.
To be honest you can get away sleeping right next to a busy road as long as there is adequate cover and it looks like a place where no one would bother to go in 99,9% of cases.
Just do a mental game and ask yourself if some bushes look alright for a one night stay, and then ask yourself is there's someone sleeping there already. You will realize pretty quickly there are so many places where someone could theoretically be staying already. The reason why most people get caught are:
a) they're dumb as bricks, and I mean in the worst way,
b) they stay there for several days, going in and out at daylight, and they start to accumulate trash, rubbish, etc. eventually someone picks up on that sooner or later. this point relates to point a)
