Yeah I could use ferrocerium or a bow drill or shit like that if I had too, but lighters are so cheap and lightweight and hard to fuck up that there's no reason to not just toss a couple of them in your pack/pockets
Where you should really be focusing your autism is tinder, not the ignition source. Personally I like paper strips coated in pitch or wax and rolled up and stuffed in a bag, but there's a ton of different things you can prepare beforehand or find innawoods that will work well.

Lots of tinder and lots of kindling. The #1 problem I've seen is people trying to build the fire up too quickly (IE throwing bigger wood on there as soon as the kindling catches). Light some paper on fire and then just pile twigs and pine cones in there until you have a big hot fire then build it up with real wood

In my emergency fire kit in my hunting pack I have this tin can with these magnesium bags, ferro rod, waterproof matches, and a bic lighter. i haven't use the magnesium bags yet but they're supposed to burn hot enough for wet tinder.

any other time I start a fire I bring a lighter why wouldn't you except for a challenge of coarse

it's also a bit of a fire hazard and can spontaneously ignite in some conditions if it's shaved really fine and exposed to air, but yolo

I carry multiple ways to start a fire for redundancy. Admittedly I could probably do without so many, but my order is like this.

For fire starter I have never been let down by WetFire, but I also carry some fibrous rope and char cloth just in case.
I know it seems like a lot but I’d rather have a plan E than just a plan A.

I like experimenting with charring different materials, surprisingly literal "TINDERfungus" or denim has been the best I've found, dried and charred nettle stems of really old ones where they get really woody have also been good

Having what you have, cottonball and vasaline trick should do. It will also catch on really fine and really dry feather stick. A handful fo tinder amd an armspan of kidling should guarantee it shoyldnt die on you early on.

I used to do the ol' cottonball and vaseline, but I found that these just work better, last longer, and are easier/less messy to carry. They're the size of half a candy bar and they're less than a dollar per cube. But if I know I'm going to a place where the wood is likely wet, I'll bring along the bigger version that lasts 30 minutes so it's a guarantee to dry out the tinder and starter log.

Basically I got really tired of spending like 30+ minutes babying damp logs and drying out tinder after a long day of backpacking, when I could be spending that time getting warm, cracking open a beer and chilling with my friends.
