Do these portable solar chargers work? My gf's family is taking me with them on their backpack trip and I need to figure some sort of way to keep my Switch/phone charged. does the solar aspect actually work or is it just a gimmick? Best portable chargers you guys have used? Its a 7 day trip without electricity so it needs to last a while and preferably be small so its not too heavy for me to carry

I use this BioLite brand panel I got from REI to charge up my Nintendo 3DS. Does the job and only ways like 2 pounds. DESU nothing wrong with some gaming in the great outdoors. Yes and no. Being a noob to solar you are probably contemplating one of the cheap little chinese power banks with an index sized solar panel in it. When that doesn't hardly work you'll throw your hands up and say "welp I guess solar is a useless technology"

Solar works perfectly if you know you need a lot of surface area, and buy 3x more than your load requires, to account for varying sunlight quality. Do not bring your switch, retard. For charging a modern smartphone (like it's plugged into a wall outlet ) you'll want somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 watts.

You can make due with less but it will cut into charging speed. If it's very sunny you can make due with 20 or even 10 watts but you won't be fast charging like at home. The more PV you buy as measured in watts, the better experience you will have.

Way the fuck more than you want to carry. Look up your laptop's charging wattage (volts times amps). That doesn't include the watts consume if you use it at the same time it's charging though, so add it up yourself or find that figure. Now multiply by 3x. It gets expensive and silly pretty fast, depending how beefy a laptop we're talking about

Yes
just make sure you're not in a cucked sunlet country like the north US, Canada or northern Europe/Russia and you're good.

In Australia one of those will power a laptop and 2 phones/powerbanks easily.
A slightly larger one will keep a battery for a freezer/fridge going for a week or two before the battery runs low.

my house has been running off of 2 small panels for 10 years now, havent been without power since.

If you dont get sunburnt on cloudy days then it means your sun just isnt strong enough where you live, so it's a "You" problem, not solar's problem.

The bigger foldout panels can get a very decent amount of charge, but only if you leave it on your tent all day or something like that. Having panels of any kind on your backpack or whatever is a bit of a meme. Smaller ones are pretty bad as straight chargers, but can kinda work if they have a battery. I had one that was about as big as a small tablet, then it could fold out to double in size. The battery when full could charge a phone a few times. and if it was in the direct sun all day would recharge itself fully, as long as it wasn't simultaneously charging something plugged in. I never went on extended trips btu given those things I think you could sustain moderate phone usage indefinitely if you had it open on your backpack all day walking around and it was sunny. When overcast it essentially didn't charge at all.

In summary I would say if you are on foot, bring a small powerbank. You will likely run out of food/water you can carry before you run out of charge unless you are just sitting at camp all day every day on your phone, in which case why both going out. If you are on a bicycle a panel setup becomes viable, especially if you can attached it to your bike well. If you go car-camping and don't want a generator it's great too.

The battery has two input charging ports which is a very good thing when charging from a solar panel since that means you can have double the amps going to the battery, cutting the charging time in half (granted you have good sunlight).

In the strictest sense, yes; they generate power when in direct sunlight. However, their use is far more valuable as a portable battery, especially the cheap ones. Charging the fuckers in sunlight is slow and wastes time, but you can do it. On the other hand, most come with a wall charging port which is far more effective for portable energy storage.

The solar panel can deliver 4.8A in the best conditions. And it actually CAN do that, according to the reviews and videos I've watched. https://youtu.be/4MPDUN7Cg8U?t=772
Here it's delivering 4 amps.

Now, the battery can only take 2 amps for charging through the micro USB port. Maybe a little more if it was USB C but that would still be 2.5/3A max. But since this battery has two input ports it can take double the amps it normally would, cutting the charging time in half.
>Input:5V 4A (5V 2A Max/Port)
On regular batteries you can have as big of a solar panel as you want or charge it directly from your house, it will still be capped by the input port.
But since this battery has double the input amps capabilities (4Amps) AND since the solar panel is capable of delivering these 4Amps, that means we're cutting charging time in half in good sunlight conditions.
Is that clear enough for you now, dumbfuck?

I own Xtorm 3 fold and it charges two devices fast as a wall plug on sunny day. Solar "powerbanks" are utter trash because small area and the fact you shouldn't overheat a battery. The only hand crank charger that actually works from the few I've tested is K-Tor but it's huge and tiresome to use. But it will get you the power to make a phonecall at night.

All the usual shitposting aside, can we take a moment to just appreciate that this tech has finally advanced to where it's actually useful and delivers on the promise? I remember all the greenwashed useless low efficiency solar novelty gadgets in the late 90s, early 2000s that would take a week to charge anything. Now we have a killer combo of cheap, high energy density, fast charging lithium power banks and cheap, large, high efficiency folding solar.

We're still not to a point where you could replace a generator with a battery/solar combo light enough to reasonably carry but there's a lot of things you can do on portable solar and battery power that would've been unthinkable even ten years ago, like boiling water for purification/cooking.

True, I remember having a solar charger as a kid (more like late 2000s) and it was an expensive novelty item, there weren't too many commonly available as well. I think it did fuck all charging from memory, and that would've been for an iPod or iPhone 3 or something with barely any battery capacity.
