Find landmarks (church towers on the plains, mountain peaks)
Measure angle between the line you-landmark and north with compass
Draw lines at that angle on map, starting at the landmark. Where they cross is you position.
Moving:
Find direction you need to go in. on map
Find landmark in approximate direction, move toward it.
Repeat every hour or so, checking your location and correcting your direction 2-3 times per day.
But seriously, map and compass is useless larp tier. Usually, you'll not have suitable landmarks and will need a sextant and tables to find your position. The areas where there's enough landmarks are usually inhabited, meaning you can just navigate along roads.
>survive in the forestNot with map and compass. In the woods, you usually can't see any landmarks. To navigate, you either need to follow among landlines (valleys, crests) or marked trails.
If you get lost, follow water: Go downhill till you find a stream of water, then follow that.
Surviving in the forest is a meme, btw. In ((cultivated)) forests it is impossible, and in natural forests, it just means surviving of meadows and clearings rather than the forest itsself. Once the trees get thick enough, they smother everything growing on the ground, meaning you won't find sufficient nutrition unless it's autumn, when you can live of tree seeds and animals eating them.
Even deer and boars need to leave the forest to eat most of the year, as any hunter can confirm.
