cut the fillets

create a dry brine 2 cups brown sugar, 1/2 cup salt 2 tsbs garlic powder and 1 tbs cayenne

cover both sides of filet in the rub and let cure for 6+ hrs. I just leave it overnight

next day rinse off the fillets there will be liquid in the container thats normal

pat dry and let it sit for an hour it has to develop a protein film for the smoke to stick to.

after that get a good smoke going and smoke it around 165-180 for 3 hrs I use apple and alder wood chips

baste with honey every hour

Anyone know any good year-round fishing spots in California? I'm going to be boondocking around starting this winter and I need a consistent source of food. I can settle for some good winter fishing spots but ideally I'm looking for lakes or streams that have good year-round reliability.

Is there any truth to barometric pressure affecting fishing? I've only been fishing for less than a month and I remembered seeing stuff about it in my early web searches. I got a ton of bites and a fish on both Thursday and Friday as the pressure was dropping then yesterday when it hit a pretty far low (I'm a pilot for a living so know the local altimeter setting on a daily basis) I got zero bites using the same lures. Even bought live worms for today just hoping I could get at least a nibble using a hook and bobber but after having a worm in the pond without a single nibble for an hour I gave up. Just asking here because it seems like a lot of fishing websites sell a lot of pseudoscience and I don't want my one personal data point to solidify it.

I've tried fishing according to the barometer. I would catch fish sometimes and not catch fish others. It was a chore and I wound up fishing less because of it so I stopped caring. It does play a role tho.

Water temp, clarity, light conditions, barometric pressure, and probably a few other things all play a role. The only time I stay home is when the river is too warm for salmonids, or if the surf/weather conditions at the beach are just too rough.

Moon phases too. If you can see the moon in the sky during the daytime, you aren't catching any big ones.

Seeing if moon plays a role is piss easy, go to mooncalc.org, lookup the photos of when you caught a fish and the time, just input it in, and you'll see if it correlates or not. All my big bass were caught when the moon was not visible during the day or when it was 3/4 waning or waxing or 1/4 waning or waxing.

Self replying to my own post. Altimeter setting went from 29.50 a couple days ago to 29.80 today (standard is 29.92). Basically ever other cast I was catching something today, it was amazing. Water also cleared up a ton so it could've been that. Started with worms then after two catches went to a beetle spinner (thanks to whatever anon suggested that a few threads ago) and got four more.

I don't know how it is in Cali but on the east coast piers are private businesses and that fee pays for someone to work the counter, the lights on the pier, maintainance, plumbing, and rebuilding after storms.

Bought a7WT SA Sonar Sink 25 Cold sinktip flyline but having some issues casting it, the final couple of feet of the sinktip doesnt roll out properly and lands in a big pile.
I don't have any issues normally casting intermediate & floating lines that have heavier heads than this sinktip so I'm not sure what im doing wrong.
Same thing happens when i just pick up and shoot and when i do 2-3 false casts.

chicken liver or cut shad are my favorites. for chicken livers i use pantyhose to hold it together. the toe is the easiest part to use, but you can use the whole foot-and-leg section by just tying a knot in the end to close it off. drop a liver in to a pantyhose pocket, then use your hook to more or less stitch the open end shut. this gives you a near indestructible bait that hangs just below the bend of your hook, which is ideal for a circle hook.

sorry m8 but that's a, 9 weight rod with a 7 written on it, which is not uncommon in modern rods. i could write an essay about how janky the aftma system is. i'd put the 19.4 gram/300 grain head on your rod and try again. part of how shooting heads do what they do is by being heavy, the shooting head i had on my 8 weight was made out of an 8 weight line.

I use this pantyhose trick with livers aswell I like to mix them with garlic salt before tying them in the pantyhose bags. I've used hotdogs soaked in kool aid, jello/corn/breadcrumb pack bait, chicken hearts, even chicken nuggets from fast food places can work. Check out "catfish and carp" on youtube, he has a few videos about homemade baits and how to rig them.

The piling up is caused by lack of line speed. I see it happen when I cast into the wind with big flies. Double haul or learn to double haul more effectively, and learn the Belgian cast. 1+/- a line or rod weight wont make much of a difference, I can cast a whole line using 8wt line on a 10wt rod and about 70ft doing the opposite. Some people can cast 50ft+ with no rod. The fault usually lies with the caster and not the gear.

then you can find a decent rod for the same price. I suggest that reel in 2500 or 3000 size, and a medium light power rod. alternatively, you could go for the 1000 series reel and an ultra light rod if you would rather target smaller species. it's very fun. the main way people spend way too much money when starting out is that they buy way too much tackle, and then learn that they will never use 75% of the shit they bought. get the rod/reel/line first, and some simple hooks or cheap beetle spins, then you can buy more tackle as you learn more.

I always use a leader. Braid, especially light braid, is very susceptible to abrasion and you want to keep it away from teeth or structure. Also it has next to 0 stretch so the leader can have a bit of a shock absorption effect.

Isn't braid marketed as being less abrasive than mono? I thought everyone used the leader to avoid "spooking" the fish, as if the hooks and all the other unnatural looking shit in lures didn't. I'm not too worried about the line being visible to fish for where I usually go since it's so muddy... if it's the abrasion I'd almost prefer to just cut off the nicked line because I can't seem to figure out how to tie the FG knot. I spent 30 minutes trying it this morning for tying the braid to the mono backing before I gave up and tied a double uni (doubling up the braid since lower diameter) since I figured that portion of the line doesn't need to be super strong for the back of the reel. I generally just suck at knots

You're confusing fluoro and braid in regard to the abrasion. And yes the spooking aspect is another consideration, but that's partially dependent on the target species. Personally I use an fg, but I will cede that is kind of tricky to figure out, but once it clicks with you it isn't hard. Look up a video by an ozzy named briggsy, he has an alternate method of locking the knot that I use that is much easier. That being said, a uni to uni is fine as long as you aren't catching fish that are going to push your line to its limit.

I have a bit of mono backing on the reel tied to my braid mainline with a double uni. End of the braid has a snap swivel. then I use mono leaders with surgeon loops for easy switch outs. Where I fish has lots of rocks at the bottom so i'd rather replace a foot of mono when it gets roughed up than cut my braid shorter.

I only started fishing this year after some basic advice from this board and tried out braid for the first time recently. Seems to like to dig into itself on the spool when pressure is applied and I dealt with several tangles before I started getting the hang of how to interact with the line and reel in a new way. I also experienced almost a buzz when reeling line as the texture of the braid went across the eyelets. (Not a huge fan of this) I did not get enough time with it to fully formulate an opinion but my gut is pushing me back to mono. I may keep one rod spooled in braid for certain applications but time will tell. Regarding leaders on braid, I understand a lot of the logic surrounding it but seems very dependent on your application. I like the simplicity and reliability of tying line directly to the lure and will look to utilize braid in situations where leader material is not going to be a dealbreaker. If I need leader for the stealth and abrasion aspects then I would rather stick with a heavier lb test mono and connect straight to my lure. I see myself using braid going forward in two situations. First, when punching through heavily weeded areas looking for that suprise hit. The braid I tried was definitely better at sawing through plant life and in those applications, visibility is not really an issue. While I have not tried it out yet, the other application I can see using braid on is when running bottom contact lures over distance. Can get that little bit longer of a cast with the braid and the increased sensitivity makes sense in that situation. Fluoro leader would get utilized in clearer water. Take all of this with a grain of salt as I am rather new to the sport but this is my experience and thoughts thus far.

most important tip is not to cast into wind. braid being so limp, especially thin braid under 20lb likes to wind knot. I usually have this issue only when throwing light lures on windy days. maybe some other things like visually inspecting the line on the spool here and there to check for wind knots, and inspecting after pulling snags too. overall it's much more pleasant to fish with due to how limp it is, but not without that one drawback. when it does get a knot, the problem is that it sinches itself up tight almost instantly because of the "dryness" of the line, and you almost always have to cut it at the knot. as for leaders, it's annoying to tie them... but it saves you from losing any main line when getting snagged. if you have a lower pound test leader at the front, if you have to break it off, you only lose the leader. If I'm fishing open water with not much shit to get snagged on, I run straight braid.

If you happened to use 4 strand braid like original Power Pro, at least try 8 strand braid before you make up your mind. I tried the 4 strand original Power Pro as my first braid due to how popular it was, and while it was great line... I also HATED the noise and rough feel when reeling. Not as bad with 8 strand, but still not mono. I use mono for anything 8lb test and lower. otherwise it's braid.

If the braid is digging into the spool enough to cause issues then it probably wasn't spooled with enough tension initially. I can tell you though that fishing braid straight to the lure isn't going to be an issue until you try to land a nice fish. If you hate eating leader when you retie then use a snap or ring of some kind. Also, braid lasts a lot longer if you fish regularly. Out of my ~20 or so fish able setups I think one of them doesn't have any kind of braid backing.

Yep, and if you're casting heavy stuff like surface iron or big swimbaits on a baitcaster it's like sandpaper on your thumb. I keep a roll of that athletic tape in my bag for my thumb or index finger on spinners, also handy if you're lipping critters with small teeth.

Spinning rods are nice. But baitcasters are as well. Put your mag/centrifuge drag to half, set the other to just enough where your lure will slowly drop when you press release button. Use thumb to stop spool just before lure hits the water when casting. That has always been the simple way for me.

how the fuck have you never used a spinning rod? btw, lots of people complain that while the rod you bought is durable, the reel itself is shit and eventually just falls apart. if that happens, get $30-50 spinning reel to replace it. they are generally bombproof and will never break from normal usage.

Went shorefishing for lakers today and saw some cool shit. A school of baby rainbows were getting herded up to the bank and moderate sized lakers were taking swipes at them. One hit my jig right away after dropping it nearby. Also had two absolute monsters (20lb+) follow, but not bite.

Looks like we're going to be shit out of luck for a huge spotty bite this year again. We've had back to back la nina which is keeping water temps above their super active range. Real bummer; tired of this weather pattern. Two years ago during a normal cycle I caught 100 in about 4 hours during this same timeframe.

Generally a spinning rod/reel setup is more versatile. With a baitcast setup the rod really needs to match up the weight of the lures you are throwing else you won't get any distance. You can still throw lighter lures on a heavier spinning setup and get some distance. If you wanna throw light lures like smaller spinners and spoons definitely go with a spinning combo.

It works fine, but you will get reduced hookup but it's worth the tradeoff, usually singles have a fantastic hook hold so you can happily go barbless. But top water lures I would stay with trebles.

I'd say at least a 9 or 10ft. And one capable of throwing at least 4oz weights, but magic number is 6 or 8. Watch some beach casting videos so you can learn how to cast such large rods properly and where.

I have NEVER fished before in my entire life, but I would very much like to change that.
I have all the basic equipment (rod, reel, bobber, small hooks, fake plastic things, jig heads?) and there is a large lake near me that is absolutely infested with Pumpkinseeds/Sunfish. The lake's single public access point is a small pier next to a boat launch.

How do I catch them? Please help. I have no idea what I'm doing and the thought of standing on the pier and getting nothing for 4 hours is very discouraging.

If you want a pike lure that can be dragged along the bottom, you want something like a big 5 inch curtail soft lure rigged weedless

you might end up getting it snagged anyway but in winter pike are as deep as can be trying to stay warm, their fins and bellies will be covered in leeches from being pressed up against the silt

im not actually sure how deep the lake is, but when im out at the deepest parts it feels like there is no chance of hitting the bottom, as far as i know, the bottom is either pretty coarse "sand" or rocks, big rocks, "the ice age put them there" type rocks, imagine pic rel, but just under water

I've fallen down the rabbit hole of Japanese Tanago/Microfishing and have watched hours and hours of these guys visiting irrigation canals and drainage ditches and pulling out small crucian carp and something called 'bitterlings'. I must say I'm completely charmed.

Have you fine Anons ever tried microfishing at all? It looks fairly cute and cozy.

I did a little in MN using a fly rod. Orangespotted and green sunfish plus golden shiners in ponds, massive variety of chubs, shiners, and darters in the rivers. Getting a rainbow darter in peak spawning colors was really neat (not my pic)

I love it. You can catch so many species you wouldn't catch otherwise. I usually cut microscopic bits of red wiggler and put them on a #14, #20, #26, or tanago hook. The telescoping tango rods are a meme but pretty clutch in terms of portability. 95% of the time a ultralight spinning rod is preferable though.

I did the same thing. It's pretty fun and a lot harder than you would think to get a hookset on those little minnows and baby bass don't go for it like you'd think they would. I've gotten a bunch of bluegill though and I'm waiting for a good low tide to hit up the tide pools.

$70 for a rod and reel is realistic. I presume you want a "do all" set up?
Get a berkley lightning rid in 7 foot medium power, a spool of 20lb power pro, and a 2500 size spinning reel. That will get you going for anything under 30 inches. Buy a few plano boxes and a backpack they will fit in, thats your tackle bag. For panfish all you really need is small bobbers, small splitshot, and small aberdeen hooks. You can also get flies and jigs for them, but you don't -have- to.
Catfish and carp are pretty simple, you basically only need a fish finder rig, get some bell sinkers, barrel swivels, and #4 bait holder hooks, you should be set for a while.
Then fishing lures is the real money hole
For Texas rigs you'll need a small selection of bullet weights, some EWG hooks, and some soft plastic worms/craws/creature baits.
While you're grabbing the ewg worm hooks and some soft plastics, find some zoom flukes and some weedless dropshot or wacky rig hooks. A weightless nose hooked fluke can be deadly.
Then for covering water some square bill crankbaits will be handy, as will spinner baits and jerkbaits. Round things off with a spook, a jitter bug, a popper, a rubber frog aAnda few jigs. Last thing you'll need is a pair of needle nose pliers, and maybe hemostats and a bait knife.

Also, those aren't baby fish. Microfishing is targeting small species that never get big.

Alright, I just got back.
Here's the rod I just got, mine's on the left.
I also got a tackle box, some top and bottom rattlers, and some jig heads. In total it was $140,which was under my budget of 150 but I probably got jewed into getting more than I needed. The guy at the shop said that pic related rod would be better for covering all the bases. I probably got jewed but at least it's lightweight.
Anyway, I'm REALLY excited to get out onto the lake! I need to find out how to get up my line (they strung it for me, but I need to line it up through the rings) and tie some knots.
What else should I watch to prepare for tomorrow?

overspooling is the main cause for sure. i thin k another factor is just general line management. mono has a memory so it can sometimes just slip through a tangle and not tie a knot. the #20 braid is just a little stiffer, and when some random bullshit inevitably happens, i believe the heavier braid will be more forgiving.

I noticed this too actually.
I was sight-microfishing some bass minnows in shallow water and the amount of enticing and jigging I had to do to get them to bite my hooked worm was crazy. They were so indifferent to it. It got to a point where I think they were only biting because I had annoyed them so much.

4 strand braid for fishing heavy vegitation/frogging(the coarseness will help cut the greenery) 8 strand for smooth casting and added sensitivity. I got back from fishing and while I had to deal with their line being put on my reel backwards, and the line itself being a piece of shit that I had to replace, I still had fun. I need to learn what baits and tackle to use, as I didn’t catch anything. It was cold out, granted. But it was a beautiful day and it was nice to get /out/ ;^)
I used a rattler (raddle trap?) and a jig head, should I get any other types?

Sort of, most people use much larger 3-5 inch long plastic tubes on 1/2oz-1oz jigheads as a general purpose laker bait for eater sized ones, or large spoons and crankbaits for big ones. During the ice fishing season I found out that little panfish jigs work absolute wonders for them, even the big ones, and when they come up shallow they still work pretty dang good for them.

Japanese call them Piton fishing rod holders and shit looks like the most smartest but obvious answer to the problem of finding a hole to put rods on rocky shores. Are there any American shops that got something similar? Because I've been looking through using different tags and search terms and I can never find any. Only on Ebay, Jap amazon and Jap fishing sites do I get any hits. I can't imagine something so useful on rocky jettys/underneath bridges/any rocks hasn't been dun befo in the US. I'm not about to pay out the ass on shipping until I exhaust my options, I'll probably try to jury rig my own version too after getting more pictures of different models.
