Is there a good source for finding remote campsites?

When I was travelling in the Rockies it was easy to just come across campsites that were like 45 minute away from the nearest other person.

I spend most of my time in NC and NY now and I don't wanna pay to camp surrounded by RV's and children but I'm having troubling finding spots.

Map apps are your friend. I use google maps and alltrails. Before I go to a remote area I’m not familiar with, especially if I’m going to camp, I like to check the satellite and topo maps. I look at the roads, significant elevation changes, see if there are any houses or cleared land nearby, look for turn-outs, side roads, trails, potential camping spots, etc.

The wikicamps app is amazing in Australia. I know there are versions for other countries but not sure how good they are in terms of data.

If you can't find some place in the Northern tier Adirondacks, you're not trying hard enough.
As for NC, I'd love an answer to that myself. Seems hopeless.

honestly, east of the Rockies it's a lot harder. Fewer national forest roads, more restrictions, more private land. Ultimatecampgrounds.com has a great repository of free and cheap campsites, though their paid app is a lot better (and worth it). Also freecampsites.net is what RVers use. But your best option in the east will always be finding a trailhead and backpacking in. There's no substitute for the solitude you can find a couple miles in. The /out/ superpower for avoiding disgusting normies is a willingness to do things that are uncomfortable, inconvenient, or marginally strenuous.

Forgot to mention, your best resource for finding undocumented dispersed camping sites is going to be the MVUM map for that particular national forest. You can usually find them online for download. It will tell you exactly what roads you're allowed to camp off of and where you can't. It's just a matter of picking a spot and heading out to see what's there.
