PCT thru-hike permit applications opened up today at 1030 AM PCT and were full (35 spots a day) by 1230 PM PCT. I had the webpage opened more than a few hours prior to opening and still didn't get a chance. Every single available day was maxxed out. Bummer, guess I'll just have to go without one. Anyone in the same boat? Does this usually happen?

I wonder if businesses reserved them all. I am imagining they make the application for all of them and then include the permit as part of a paid hiking guide package or something.
I feel like I read a news article about something like this happening for campgrounds that are free to the public, but require a reservation. Of course, this lead to many camping spots going unused because they were fully reserved in the system but nobody was scheduled with the 3rd party entity that snatched the original reservation.

most all go through the pcta. im sure there are some who dont but the national park sections have rangers patrolling the pct and checking permits, esp the jmt section

Some areas require a permit for wild camping, so I imagine that's where the rangers get you if you are just doing your own through hike. I agree it is ridiculous.

This year about 50 miles of trail was closed due to previous years forest fires, and a bunch of people had to skip larger sections due to active fires

The goal is to limit use and to raise money. They need money to build trails, set up camp sites, repair signs, etc. They need to limit use because 1000 people shitting in an outhouse every day isn't sustainable. 1000 people cutting down some saplings to make a shelter each night isn't sustainable. They also probably have water problems.
