For next year I was thinking of getting into bow hunting, since my work sends me away every year from mid October to mid November. And bow season is open early enough I could get out before leaving.
I have a samick sage (well, I need new bolts, and a string) that I used to mess around with and could get back into.
It's 45 lbs, so it's legal to use, but is it a reasonable obtainable goal?

I've harvested a couple of samba deer and rabbits with pic related which is kind of similar but with a kisser instead of a peep. Topoint R2 which costs $120 max on Ebay. Aliexpress is great for buying broadheads. If you've never eaten rabbit and venison sausages with mashed potato and gravy you need to do it right now

Been out with a 50lbs longbow.
Normally will hit straw target at 30m repeatedly in bullseye or first ring.
Not even hitting the damn target half the time today.

So I wanna get into archery with the hopes of branching into hunting.

Used to shoot as a kid but that was over a decade ago with who knows how unfitting of a bow. I understand the basics like a peeper, trigger release, weight let off, never shoot dry, etc.

What are some brands you could recommend? I hear a lot of nice brands have cheaper models under different names, I also hear stuff like Facebook market place is great because pro hunters like a new bow every year and sell the old ones. I know I need to go to an archery shop for measurements before I can look for a used one. Just need a push in the right direction.

I have an old Fuse Intrepid recurve that's a good 5-6 years old but has been stored indoors in low humidity all that time. I want to replace the limbs (currently 50#) with some lighter ones so that I can get my form right on something lighter before I get back into heavier draws.
Since it's a takedown bow I figure it'd be easy enough to replace the limbs, but I can't find any limbs for sale at all. Am I just shit out of luck, or looking in the wrong places? Where do other anons buy limbs?

Their entry level Legit and Cruzer have an adjustable draw weight between 35# and 75# so you can practice with a lighter weight but then tune it up to deer murdering spec when you're confident. Yeah man go for it. There's a thing called Stumping which is pretty fun. People use judo or blunt rubber points to hit things that look challenging without embedding the arrows. You can make a game like Skate out of it with another person. Like you hit a thing and then they have to hit it then hit another thing, then you have to hit that thing and the next thing and add another thing etc

dont worry, word on the street is that modern material bows can take it without an issue, especially those solid fibreglass limbed ones. also heard that most damage to bows happens during (unskilled) stringing and unstringing. certainly wouldn't risk it with my dad's 30-40 year old oly recurves though.

Highly recc a Bear Cruzer as a starter bow. I picked one up in September after I took a spill during a hunt and bent the cams on my Fireflite. Since it was so old, couldn't get it fixed and money was tight so I picked up a the Cruzer for cheap. It is an absolute dream of a bow for what I paid for it.

You generally don't want to shoot from the shelf with a compound, but older ones are made for it. I like drop away overdraws personally, but whisker biscuits seem to be what's currently "in".

My first bow was an elite, but I'm unfamiliar with that model so I can't say whether you got a good deal. A compound for less than 300 is pretty solid tho.

you did pretty good but if you really didn't shoot for 20 years than remember that one of the most important parts of archery is maintaining proper form so try to prioritize this over instantly shooting at longer distances (even though I know it's the fun part) so you can avoid making bad habits

I’ve been concerned about that, so I’ve set up stations at 15 yards, 20, 30, and 35. I run about 30-40 arrows at each range (15, 20, and then 30) before moving to 35. At around 150 arrows or so I need to start taking breaks though because I start getting shaky if I don’t take 2-5 minute rests between sets.
Do you have any suggestions? I’m kinda flying blind here t b h

Moved back to 15 yards real quick. First two were to the left, second two were just a little low after I adjusted, last one was center, fired a sixth afterwards because I was having fun.
I generally try to keep it to 5 arrows so I don’t lose track if I miss.

Well then you are good with the setup I think the shaking is to be expected especially after 150 arrows but if you are worried about that (shooting a bow uses some muscles that aren't normally stressed like that) so you could try a weaker bow or just do some exercises before shooting to warm up and build up strength other than that I think everything is alright

don't worry a about the grouping especially so early, trust me it will come with time, keeping it down to 5 arrows is a good idea the one thing I recommend is to set up even the most basic arrow catcher behind the targets but I might be paranoid about it since I've lost a few of my best arrows in undergrowth when I once came back to archery after a long break and no need to thank me I'm happy to help out

My wife has a 30 lbs recurve that I’ll use sometimes. She actually was the one that convinced me to do this again since we moved too far away from my old hobby.
It’s been a really great thing for our family and we bought a little nerf bow for our daughter since she loves going out and doing this with us so much.

Depending on how old she is, you could get her a little bear cub if they even make them anymore. I think I got mine when I was 5ish.

I just read what I wrote.
Just to clarify, I mean back when my wife was a teenager she was doing archery competitively (Korea). I don’t live with an Olympic pro that can teach me to do archery.
She said we should do it again as a family so our daughter would learn to love it and have a sport.

Check ebay. You can find old new stock on there for pretty cheap. I purchased a brand new bow that was a 2 year old model still in the box for about 40% of the original price.

They're 50x50x20cm Yellow Jackets that cost around $80 each in Australia but they're targets for life, like you can unzip the housing and rearrange the different layers of foam when they get too shot up. The answer depends on a lot of things (draw length, draw weight, compound vs. recurve) and "quality" varies from person to person (I like carbon, my dad hates it and prefers aluminum). Your best bet is to go to your local archery shop and they'll recommend you something. I know a lot of anons are hesitant about shops because they're afraid to get ripped off, but honestly you'll find better prices for most stuff in the shop than you will online. Plus, some places will paper tune your bow for free when you buy a dozen arrows.

Literally doesn't matter so long as the bow supports your draw length. Just remember that your draw weight will differ significantly from those with shorter draw length on the same bow so be sure to look at draw tables to see your poundage compared to what the #@" says.

In here to flex my bows. I've got 2 from Misko Rovcanin in Serbia. a 100lbs @28 50 inch long made of ash/wenge shooting 740 grain arrows as my main bow.
then my older one which is a 80lbs @28 60 inch long of the same design which is ash/ash.

kek, i got into archery not long ago and dont find this the case. Boomers seem to be rather cold or just doing their own thing. Younger folk will be in their own established friend circles.
Get a strong sense that new members are desirable for their club fees but the established archers dont really care for them. Sort of like gym subscription schemes which rely on people being lazy so the place doesnt get overcrowded.

I highly doubt it. A legitimate longbow replica has a draw weight pushing 100# at full draw. Medieval Englishmen could get away with it because they were midgets and peasants are strong. Same thing goes for Mongolian Horsebows. Getting a legitimate replica to shoot is stupid if you like your shoulders. Just get a modern equivalent.

Barring shit like bent limbs which are pretty obvious, you can teach yourself archery trivially, and a shop isn't going to teach you good form in half an hour.

For example I never found a definitive answer on how many twists I should keep on my bowstring with the bow I have. the amount of twists you have adjusts the brace height. measure it using that not how many times you twisted it because the the string gets older it will lengthen and change. too many twists shortens your string which means that your power stroke is shorter which slows your arrow. and it increases how much the limbs are bending for no benefit while stressing and wearing the bow down faster. 20 twists sounds like too much. ideal brace height depends on the bow. can be as short as 5 inches for english longbow or 9 inches for Olympic recurve

Almost every bow manufacturer recommends more than 10, and almost every bow manufacturer gives you an optimum brace height, and you should add twists to settle somewhere in the middle of it. Bow squares are inexpensive and also useful for nock setting.

The cable system balances out the stress on the limbs at rest which is why you can safely unstring a recurve without a bench but not a compound.

It's fine to keep recurve bows strung as long as they're made with modern materials like fiberglass instead of wood or bone. At worst they'll lose a tiny bit of draw weight after several years.

the weight might stay but it loses snap back speed so the bow gets much less efficient because it gets set more into a drawn shape. by unstringing it you keep it wanting to snap back further forward so the power is better

The closest I've been able to sneak up to to a deer without them noticing is 30 yards. I can improve that for sure.
In my hunting unit baiting is legal, so I could set up a blind and salt pile. But, is 30 yards a reasonable distance for a recurve shot? Right now I'm just starting and only comfortable up to 10 yards to hit a 12 inch group

Not exactly. The stationary forces of a strung recurve apply to certain parts of the limbs which means the force is contained throughout the bow, but it slowly damages the limbs by pulling down and back. The cable system of a compound applies the stationary force through the cams and cables which has a negligible effect on the limbs while stationary as the cables contain the stationary force. Look at this rough spot diagram.

Also that being said, if you are storing a compound for a long time, i.e. a year or more, you should unstring it as it will potentially do damage to your cable system and in turn damage your bow, but unlike a recurve the damage is (expensively) repairable by replacing the string, cables and potentially cams. Any and all long term storage should lead to having your bow inspected by a professional before being fired again.

the limb's on a compound are barely bent in from bracing its only enough to keep the string and cables taught. compound limbs are much thicker and only bend a few inches and all the draw length comes from the fact you are using a 3/1 pulley. whereas with a recurve bow the limbs are bent almost half way through their effective bending ability just to brace the bow. so by leaving it braced for ages you are putting a lot of strain and stretching/forming the bow into a new shape. sort of how wooden skis are made you get them moist and warm they will bend and then you cool it and it will stay in that shape. if you leave a recurve braced the same thing happens from moisture and temperature changes day by day. the power and speed of a recurve comes from the fact it wants to snap back to its unbraced shape so that's not something you want to lose. compounds are just super stiff and the pulley lets you exert a lot of force on it not so much that the limbs want to bend back very far. also strings and cables stretch over time if left under tension which will reduce performance

Bear makes several starter compounds. I picked up a Cruzer >>2254291 as a budget replacement for a better bow and I'm probably going to stick with it for a few years because it was about half of the price of bows that shoot the same.

As the guy you're replying to, I personally use carbons for target shooting, aluminum for fucking around and for hunting. Once you get it, I suggest taking it into a bow shop. It'll cost you a bit to get it tuned and set up for you, but you'll be much better off for it.

i have been using victory v force sports for the past few years. they stay true and dont splinter even after 100s of times hitting dirt takes hitting a stone directly to break them all while being the cheapest avaliable in my country(nz)

its not just wingspan its also the length ratio between shouders and arms. get an arrow that has lengths marked on it and test at different draws. you should be aiming to get your body into an aligned and mechanically strong position. both shoulders down and towards the spine slight lean forward so that the force is directed down into your ribcage where its solid and not up to your head which comes from having your torso straight up or leaning back this can cause injury

I'm of the belief that you should buy once cry once, so I was looking at getting a Hoyt torrex LD, otherwise, the Bear I was using was pretty good, much more customisable on the draw weight. Hoyt was twice the price of the Bear, but I've heard and read Hoyt are better quality and usually recommended if you have the money

Hoyt being higher quality is just a meme. For example where some parts on pse are machined aluminum the Hoyts have the same piece as plastic (the sight mount for one if I recall correctly a pretty important piece). you literally get less for more money with Hoyt. Pse also has the highest ipo speed which tells you that the design is more efficient
