so recently i have been looking at getting a new jacket for outdoor use (hiking shooting) and just for general wear i would prefer no hood and that it doesnt break the bank

Army surplus store, buy a field jacket (pic related).

I've had mine since 2002, I could probably walk around naked in that thing if I really wanted to. It has a hood, but it rolls up inside the neck area. I've never used mine in the last 11 years.

Warm as fuck, probably will cost you less than 50 bucks.

This jacket is top of the line in fashion, insulation, and visibility.

Let your fellow woodsman know that you are style conscious but not flaunting your obvious superiority. During hunting season you need to show your fell hunters that you are in the area, and we all know how tacky orange is.

Is it warm? You bet your stupid face it is! You could probably wear this with no pants and be happy as a clam.

Will it break the bank? Not at all. It is common man price for uncommon man quality.

Seconding surplus jackets. Father-in-law gave me one as a gift a few years back and it's held up really well. It feels like more of a shell, but it's surprisingly insulating, and very durable. You can probably find one cheap in a milsurp store.

I don't want to be the faggot that wears military kit when just out on a hike. When we do AT trips we are specifically forbidden from wearing any military stuff.

I won't deny though that the smocks are good as an overlayer. They're not waterproof though.

To top that off our new waterproof jackets don't have hoods. I suppose thats to make it easier to shoot when lying down but its a little irritating because it means I cant wear it when I'm working outdoors in the rain now

Well, see, my smock is perfect for hiking. So are my MTP trousers. So if I took this to it's logical limit I'd end up hiking dressed in my entire uniform. That would just be ridiculous (although so horribly practical).
