What is the best portable water filter?

I need a good quality water filter that I can carry in my kit, I want to make sure its a quality one and not a piece of junk, even if I have to pay more for it. I would like it to filter bacteria as well as viruses if possible. What do you guys have and what do you recommend Posting links is appreciated. Also, any advice as far as using them?

The Katadyn ones that are integrated into the nozzle of a bag are good, not purifiers like you're after. filter=microorganisms, purifier=viruses. For purifiers IMO your best option is going to be tablets or MSR makes some purifiers that are really high quality and durable. For my money though filters are all you need if you're going to be able to find relatively clear, moving water.

Sawyer Squeeze. Check around the area you will be /out/ and make sure there arent viruses in the local water sources. A Grayl press is anti viral and I have heard good things about those.

Water filters usable in North America have become so cheap and plentiful any of them will do. Under a certain price point about $80 or so they almost certainly won't work for viruses though but viral waterborne pathogens are very rare in North America.

Get a sawyer if you're planning on actually using the thing. They last several thousand times longer than any competitor, and are among the cheapest since they are produced in large volume for the military. Getting the slightly bigger ones (mini or squeeze) is worth it - the micro is a pain to use with gloves. The squeeze also has lifetime warranty, while the mini "only" has a warranty for a million gallons.

They're slightly cheaper than the saywer mini (~5$, iirc), but only last for a few thousand L. The sawyers last for several million

The expensive pump types are supposedly good - but they're fucking expensive. The cheap model they made to compete with the sawyer is designed in such a way that contamination of the clean side is almost certain.

So lets say I didn't need to eat for a month. I carry no extra water but there's plenty of dirty water around. Would you be able to sustain yourself using this waterfilter or is it really just emergency case use?

if you live in a polluted enough shithole that you cant drink the rainwater then are you truly /out/ in the first place?

Yes you will be able to do that but you'll have to backwash the Sawyer filter using the syringe that comes with it, there are videos about this process it's pretty simple. Do that anytime the water output becomes shit and it'll restore it back to normal.

Never saw that one before, but it has an obvious design flaw:
Notice how it tapers to both sides? When you're using a filter, your hands are bound to get contaminated, and with this taper, there's a pretty high chance water droplets from your hands will flow towards the clean side.
That's why the sawyers (except the micro) have those oversized caps on the end.
If you're running it inline, that flaw is not relevant, but then you get the usual problem of risking the filter freezing and bursting in colder weather, since it'll always have water inside.

Sawyer is your answer, but personally I picked up an msr trailshot or whatever their fast hand pump is called and its pretty good. I fill my 2l jug very quickly. Not sure how good of an actual filter it is though.

You should actually look into that, anon. All rain water has micro plastics in it, still need to be filtered out.

i dont use filters but i do in some places and have a 30$ amazon filter rig for backpacking (similiar to the MSR pumps)
