What's the best camping hatchet (one that will last me for at least 5 years) I can buy? What materials should I look for in terms of steel? And are wood handles better than fiberglass ones?

Looks like a machete for fags. I usually carry a camp shovel for poop holes and putting out fires with dirt. It can cut some branches too if you know how to use it

Just do your self a favor, carry a boys axe. It's maybe another pound, 2 lbs max, but you get a much bigger handle, can split logs a lot easier, and are a lot safer to use.

I'd you really need an hatchet just take a boys axe

I frequently shill for billhooks on this board when someone asks for something to clear brush, to do battony-chop-chop or split small diameter wood.
And it was bushcrafters that gave me the idea
(picrel not mine)
Locally made ones are cheap and made of thick cheap 1045 as a farm tool should be.

If you REALLY want a hatchet, get a fiskars 14in. Its light, durable, cheap. My friend has been beating on his for 4 years and its still rock solid

i'd love one of those actually. most of my use case is clearing out undergrowth on my land, right now my go to is a gerber machete (with a serrated edge on the back) good for vines and smaller limbs; but has trouble on thicker branches.

Main (and really, only) problem with it is that it's not heavy enough to really de-limb pine trees properly. I've found a small hatchet is pretty perfect, cleanly pops small branches <3" off from the trunk. so only having to carry one tool would be a win.

The leather stacked handle is prettier but the rubberized and slightly bigger version is better in that you get much less shock (almost none) in your hand and can easily use it two handed if you want to. I've owned both and ended up giving away the smaller one, just because the bigger one is a bit easier to use all around.

These saws are cheaper than silkies of equivalent length, and take $4 standard replacement blades you can get at any hardware store. Yes youre limited to a maximum depth of 6in~, but noone is going to cut any logs larger than 12in diameter with a hand saw while camping

Those are the only tools you need. I would grab a machete (not the fag-hook one) instead of the saw though. What's the point of carrying a saw if you have a good hatchet with you?

I've never tried this myself, but would it be possible to shove a stick into a fiskars hatchet and thereby have a longer axe? From what I understand most of the fiskars have very similar size & weighted heads.

It comes dull as fuck. I have toured an estwing factory and they literally do the blade profile with angle grinders. I can't get mine that sharp, but I think it's due to the angle of the edge. The benefit of it it is not worrying about the handle and everything else is a downside. Get a more traditional axe or a fiskars.
