Help w/ Backpacking Gear Plan for Cyber Monday

Gonna splurge on a nice setup after wanting for years. I'd like to be backpacking for most of winter break. Not sure at all what to get so if someone could just make a list for me that'd be awesome.

I live in the PNW so it gets a bit cold and wet this time of year. I hope to keep the bill under $1k.

I was hoping to go out for several days at a time so I'm looking at buying some nicer gear. Normally I use gear similar to what you describe, minus the glock (keep meaning to buy guns too though).

It will be cold too and I don't wanna be freezing at night.

How do I stop being such a minimalist

I want good gear but literally can't think of anything I would want but see I only have a rucksack and clothes and a sleeping bag and I mean with food and water I can cover 80 miles like that

But I know folks actually *bring* gear

Where do I start?

If you're an unimaginative sperg, get better gear. Get a better backpack, a better sleeping bag, a better tent, better clothes, etc.

What size backpack do I want here? I'm looking at the Osprey Kestrel 58L, but I'm not sure if that's big enough for the increased bulk of winter gear. I don't think I'll be camping in snow or below freezing this year though, fwiw.

I agree about being a minimalist though, when the weathers nice i often don't even bring food (or cookware, utensils, etc). it's nice to fast or just look around

I have a few weeks off around Christmas and want to go camping. I live in the PNW, so it's gonna be cold. Probably won't be camping in snow or below freezing since that requires better gear (though I hope to acquire gear that enables this).

So I'm trying to find a bag that will be suitable for this and fair weather backpacking (I don't have any proper backpacking gear right now). Same goes for a sleeping bag and tent.

You think a 58L is too small? Basically, I want a bag that allows me to do winter treks (willing to sleep in a hammock) but also allows me to carry a good portion of my gfs (he/him) gear in the summer.

A down 0 degree bag will be roughly $275-$300. A synthetic filled bag will be a bit cheaper but heavier and won't pack down as small. A good 65-75L pack canbe bought new for like $200-$300. If not worried about a buch of snow, you can probably get away with a good 3 season tent for $300 or less. Lots of anons seem to go tentless in the winter with things like tarps and bivvies which I know nothing about.

Well, those are just the big ticket items. Lots of little things you'll need as well, like cookwear and a stove, sleeping pad, bear canister, pooping equipment, other things I'm surely forgetting. Shouldn't be TOO mich more, but good chance of pushing you over the $1k mark. 58L sounds a little small to me desu. Keep in mind you'll need a bunch of extra layers when compared to warm weather, and if you want to go out for several nights, you'll have to pack that much more food (guessing you have water sources in PNW). Which reminds me, buy a water filter. Sawyer are really popular, and for good reason. I personally wouldn't be comfortable buying smaller than 65L, but more experienced anons coupd probably get away with less.

Many bags these days are made extra light but are 65L and end up having a weight limit of like 35lb. Meaning you will not be able to comfortably bring proper mountaineering equipment. Winter = big strong bag, preferably with external attachment points for yardsale-ing as needed

look into getting a quilt from Hammock gear and a nice inflatable insulated sleeping pad like a neoair xtherm. That will keep you very warm and be a small and light option. Used that combo on many cold nights comfortably

Not exactly gear, but you can buy 30lbs of pecans for ~$120 @ https://cjdannemiller.com/
It's enough to last you through one really long trip or multiple trips if kept right, and if your area is getting cold around this time of year they'll keep fine for a long time

OK guys cyber monday has now largely passed but i managed to buy an enlightened equipment enigma 850 down quilt rated for 10F. It was $270. Did I eff up?

I'm waiting for some responses on a Thermarest NeoAir XLite, and trying to find a good deal on a DCF trekker tent. Waiting on some replies for a used Zpacks Duplex and as well as a Tentatarp Aeion Li right now. Hope I get the Duplex, it's a killer deal.

Now that we have all that figured out, what's a suitable bag? I definitely want a DCF one. Is 40L sufficient size for weekend winter trips?

So I'm kinda retarded and don't know any better but I think I just scored pic rel. 40L just hope it fits everything and isn't too bag. Coolest looking pack I had seen yet so I just bought it up. Love that the back pocket doesn't have a snag/tear prone mesh but has daisy chains so stuff can be dried. I like that it's xpac too which is supposedly better for packs due to having higher abrasion resistance (and thus potentially greater longevity)

I really like Dan Durstons stuff from what I've been reading. Joined the waitlist for the X-Mid Pro which is like my dream tent (single pane trekker DFC, like a Duplex, though ~2oz heavier, but with more room, bigger vestibule and vents. He implied he's trying to keep the price under $650 too and that they'll (hopefully) be ready in Spring. So anyway I think I'm just gonna wing until then.

Sweet Ospray bag! I almost got the Kelster or Exo before my friend started yapping about UL. Super glad I'm able to get this DD40 for a similar price point as the cheaper bags I was considering before.

But I have a 50 liter backpack and after my tent and sleeping bag are in their stuff sacks, my sleeping gear only takes up around 25L of my pack, which you can obviously bring down if you strap either the tent or sleeping bag to the outside. You're in the PNW, so you might need a bear canister for your food that could necessitate a larger pack, but for a weekend trip I think you'd probably be able to fit everything you need in a 40L pack.

Cool, I got the 40L I posted here: >>2257379. It's gonna be cold out so I hope to have room for extra clothes AND fishing gear plus a stove and cookware. I don't really have my full list down yet but have purchased an ultralight fishing rod/reel, the pack, tent and sleeping pad/quilt. So I still need to buy a stove, headlamp and a bunch of other little stuff. I'm buying the smallest and lightest stuff I can so I can afford to take extra stuff and can fit a tent for two in the summer when a friend goes, so hopefully it works out.

If not, I got everything for really good prices so far and can resell and get a bigger pack. Anyway pretty stoked about my fishing pole, rod and reel comes out to like 5oz and it's big enough for catching fat trout.
