hey /out/
signed up for a scuba course at my uni. says i can get certification as a diver.

Any tips? I have no idea what i can do to help me ease into this new venture

You can legally scuba dive. What type of fucking question is that?

also, please dont bump. its a slow board and if anything it deters people from posting. Swing by every half an hour to see if someone has posted, check up on the thread for about a week. You dont make a thread on /out/ expecting to get all the answers and a full thread done in an hour or two.

PADI advanced open water certified diver here.

The benefits are numerous - you get a slick card with your face on it that you can use to show anyone that you know how to dive.

Or if you're not like me you can actually go and dive with it. Shit's expensive if you want to get gear and stuff, plus the day fees and stuff.

My only tip is to take the equalization shit seriously. I fissured my sinus that way once, though I was freediving at the time. Worst pain in my life for about two days. Did scuba a few days afterwards though, was a bit worried but nothing happened.

I got my open water when I was 10. My licence still has a pic of me from primary school.
Yeah equalisations weird. I went to a pool session once with a slight cold, couldnt equalise on the way down. It was like hitting a barrier where you couldnt go any deeper.
Ended up snorkeling whilst watching the lesson.
Was dry suit lesson tho, uncomfortable as fuck, kinda glad I didnt do it

I have a PADI open water certification (the plebbest one) and my entire family are PADI certified divers of different skill/certification levels.
Basically, you'll be taught the handsigns to give, the way pressure scales as you go down, how to check your equipment, and how to act in emergency situations.
If you go diving deeper, past 16m, they'll also teach you about how your brain will perform in depths, about oxygen poisoning, decompression stops you need to make etc. etc.
Cool stuff and easy to learn.

I'll be off to the Maledives in a week, mainly going to do diving.

PADI Rescue here. Basically, the card lets you rent tanks, and other gear if you don't have it. Also, usually it's checked before a dive park or dive boat will let you enter. The knowledge isn't hard, but take the time to learn it right, because you can very easily get in heaps of trouble that have a very sudden, assured end if you don't.

Don't hold your breath and ascend.
Equalize, and if you can't equalize, stop and ascend until you can.
Swim with your feet, no arm stuff. Get forcefins too.
No nose exhalations.
