Hello /out/

I am not, nor have I been a soldier. But I have this gearfaggy dream of building a MOLLE-kit to pack my hiking gear.
To date I've been struck with failure, I find many a pouch made to carry ammo - but would you know they dont make tent-sized MOLLE-pouches.

Comfy as it might be for small stuff, should I just give up on making an all-MOLLE rig to carry my stuff when I go on trekks?
For those of you who wonder, I live in scandinavia - so that's the kind of terrain I'll be walking in.

sounds like a horrible Idea, but thats just a personal thought. Maybe look into a shotgun scabbard, that may fit a tent.

You could use a rucksack and attatch your molle stuff to it? I've never seen a molle pouch big enough to fit something like a tent, even the tiny 1 man tents they issue out to us in the army, your best bet would probably be a drop bag though.

Webbing on your hip belt can be very useful, but apart from that, not really. There are a few modular backpacks, but if you want to have optimal gear, you buy a backpack for your needs.

Heck, look at soldiers, they use a regular backpack (albeit some with webbing - pic related old usmc backpack).

I have a 85L backpack for my long distance trekking and mountaineering. I use the top lid as lumbar pack for day tours. If I want to extend that, I use a webbing sleeve I made for it.
That works really well. One pouch for map, compass, swiss knife etc. Another for a camera.

But replacing your main pocket with several small ones is silly.

I can understand the feel to get something more customized to your needs with dedicated pockets for everything, but it's a waste of money. People get regular backpacks for a reason.

I actually like my ILBE pack, but I kind of wish it didn't have the webbing, except on the belt, where there isn't any. I assume if I rip out the stitching on the webbing the fabric underneath will be all thin and full of holes?

Get this thing from your local tailor's shop to remove seams. I don't think it will be too much of a problem, but you might want to try it out on the top lid first to see how it works.

I have the ILBE pack as well and I really like it, especially since it compresses down pretty well. However it DOES weight a lot, it's not optimized for mountaineering, and - as you said - it sucks that there is no webbing on the belt.
