Always worth looking at a poncho for rain, like silnylon stuff. There's the packa too and if rain hits, you can always use a trash bag.
I hate jackets inflexibility, and live in Northwest. If I use a jacket, I typically use tightly woven polycotton like the British CS95. Bought several surplus and dyed them brown. I haven't had an issue yet where water broke through, it can be waxed, the polyester helps it dry quickly, and its long enough where most the water drizzles to the floor and not onto my pants.
There's now a more modern version, and Helikon has a version as well called the PCS smock or something like that.

I live in Colorado. And this is what I carry on the majority of my shoulder and winter seasons.
>wool base layer
>insulation layer, Arcteryx atom LT (non hood version)
>marmot hardshell
>nike(lol) down parka that I got off eBay.

If you live in a dry climate, a down parka is absolutely worth the coin. I put that jacket on all the time.

And you size these jackets to be worn together as a system. I wear a medium base layer, the parka is an XL. You want to be able to wear it all or individually as nature requires.

Arcteryx Atom LEAF version. Wet bush, windy subalpine and winter alpine in NZ. It's wind proof enough to keep you warm but also lets enough air though to keep you cool when moving. It's water resistant enough for very light showers, still keeps me warm when it's soaked though and also dries really quickly which is most important.

I use an old US Army PCU for a waterproof. It's pretty beat now and some of the zip have gone but it mostly works fine.

Unlined (true) softshells with proper layering
OR ferrosi 90% of the time, including everyday wear
Patagonia pcu level 5 for longer trips and innawoods larping
For pissing rain either an older goretex shell or EMS hardshell
Gucci brands (Patagonia, Arc'teryx, Outdoor research, marmot etc) are gtg. Mountain hardwear, Columbia, North face has good shit too
Honestly if you know how to layer properly and what to use for your weather conditions then even chinesium works
