I met a guy who hitchhiked from Oregon to NYC (and back I think). He ended up in some pretty sketchy situations staying with some weird people but luckily made it out unscathed. On top of all the other challenges, you should consider the aspect of dangerous people.

I recently hiked on a long-distance trail and passed someone with a "WALK ACROSS AMERICA" sign written on his back. Pretty fucking ballsy to do that this time of year in this part of the country (far north, an hour from Canada).
