What are you guys using for electricity and what gear are you powering?

I just need something to charge flashlights and my phone & tablet.

The question you ask is dependent on what is brought and the priority it has to be charged. I have a very simple and compact solar pack that is for emergency and for the flashlight

If you are taking stuff to distract you from nature or because you really got to get that report done for mr. Johnson, then just stay home

Received wisdom is that solar chargers are so trash that it really takes a long time before they are better than just carrying a handful of cheap powerpacks.

I've got a 1000mah and that does me for 3 days or so when my map is on my phone (I KNOW I SHOULDNT, FUCK OFF MOM).

Got two more ~200mah packs that I could throw in for a few more days.

I taught myself the local Dendrology and Botany with books. Depending on where you live self teaching mycology is dangerous... Most mushroom rich states have mycology clubs that give classes.

A field guide is great, but a tablet or what ever is a thousands times better because now I can hold multiple books on the subject, or just have a lot of books covering multiple subjects all in one spot. Usually if I'm in the forest it tends to be darker, so trying to look at a book becomes more of a pain due to less light, so a tablet is nice for that cause I can read due to the light it put off. I self taught myself mycology years ago, now grow gourmet and medicinal mushrooms for a living.

No. Plants of the Pacific Northwest coast is all a beginner needs in my area and anything more advanced is classroom type lessons that can still be referenced in the afore mentioned guide. You can tab books and press sample in pages.

get a garmin watch or handheld or something else for the maps, I have a fenix that i dig but they make some sweet hand helds that work much better than a tablet. Also, hate to be that guy, but get a nice set of waterproof maps and compass. saved me more than once.
Otherwise, i got a ravpower cheapy off amazon that works nicely. Maybe get a biolite stove, i've charged a phone on it while cooking some burgers.

Just get one of those 10000 mAh battery packs. They can charge your phone and other usb toys for a week. Find a library or something to charge at next time you reach civilization, usually takes 8 hours.
Solar panels aren’t gonna cut it, you’ll be charging all day long and get maybe 5% charge.

just get one of those, unless you live in like far-north Finland/Canada or some other shitty sun-let country.

This is true for the small power bank combo units like in the OP but not of larger folding arrays. PV isn't somehow inherently weak you just need to size the array to the load properly.

I use a power brick and just charge my phone when I need to. Most of the time my phone is off though.

i bought this thing, Rockman 500W solar generator. Everyone says get a jackery but I prefer the way this handle folds flat, jackery seems like it will be a pain in the ass playing tetris with my stuff in the trunk with its handle. I like that it has powerpole connections too.

I top it off during trips with a 120w solar panel. These power my phone, ham radios, and 18v tool batteries if I happen to have them. Sometimes bike accesories too if I'm doing a biking trip. For shorter trips, or ones when I am not bringing my HF rig, I'll just have a 4000mAh power bank and I've never gone below 33% on it.
