Regarding your first question, licenses arent just to collect fees, but they help pay for wildlife management, the funding of which they use to sometime dump the fish you catch into streams or ponds (depending on the local management) and also to track other wildlife populations and set bag limits. Thats actually pretty important. You aren't paying for a right to have fun or get food but a right to insure the food you catch isn't farmed beyond whats available, either naturally there or what they provided

I'm sure other anons will chime in on your 2nd question, but yes, you can fish in winter

I've been fishing for a long time but that entry level medium-light rod is always needed. I recently upgraded mine to a Shimano Catana EX Spinning 210 (7-20g casting weight) with a Penn Wrath 2500
The Catana EX is the goto nonshit rod here, all the shops seems to be stocked with them. Quite cheap, light and feels good in the hand.
The Penn reels are simple build but with steel gears that last a lifetime, front brake has precise adjustment compared to the shitty rear brakes where it gets gritty and sticky after a day at the shore

For first fishing trip I'd suggest going with someone who knows their spot and can lend you the needed equipment. I'd say getting the kind of rod that doesn't have a reel, just a piece of string attached to the end in length of the rod with light floater gear (don't know the english word) used for catching bait fish
Then the aforementioned light-medium rod for small to medium predators and a medium-hard rod for ledgering (? is this the word?), maybe a 300-330 size feeder rod and gear.
This will cost money so this is why it is better to start with a mate and try out a few kinds of fishing and go for the ones you know you like.

No. Do you want one? Prolly.

Honestly a good GPS with good contour lake maps is more important than a sounder, but a good sounder can help you find basin suspended fish (crappies in the states, dunno what fills that role elsewhere) and will show you the thermalcline, which can be important.

And they're cheaper than they've ever been.

Lost a tail on one of the soft plastics already, it was a bluefish sort of day so I switched to some lures I was more comfortable losing :)

I transport my hobie outback on top of my Mazda 3 and haven't scratched anything yet. You just can't wing it. Get good crossbars, some cradles and a drop cloth to lay on the roof of the car to keep it from scratching the paint. Use ratcheting tie downs to make it secure.

They even sell purpose made kayak loading pads, but I just use a large beach towel folded over the back. Wheel the kayak to the back, lift the bow into the first cradle and then pick up the stern and slide it forward.

I used to feel kind of guilty about it, but after a few dozen socal sportboat trips I got over it. On some of those trips you can easily go through 50+ sardines a day if it's a flyline bite.

New to fishing and I gotta ask what difference does “quality” gear make? I have a couple cheap spinning rods I got from Walmart, mono line, and soft plastics. I’m having fun with it as it stands. Part of me wants to up my gear, the other part says it’s not necessary because I’m having success catching the fish I’m targeting

It is nice to have. The biggest differences will be:
Braided line allows you to feel a whole lot more at the end of the line, as it has no stretch
A nice rod will allow for a better hookset, better casting, and alot more feeling
A nice reel will have a smoother drag system which will help prevent losing fish

Basically it makes a difference for sure, but it's not strictly necessary obviously

Quality is nice but """quality""" is just shiny gimmick. The problem with cheap reels is the gears are plastic or cheap brittle metal and the bearings are shit or nonexistent. Good quality reels have proper steel or brass gears and good bearings. Also rear brakes are shit, gets sticky or gritty and you can't properly set them, always too tight or too loose without proper middleground. You want to look for front brake reels.
Similar with rods, cheap ones won't have the proper integrity and the rings will not glide properly and will get loosened over time.
You don't have to shell out loads of money for quality stuff but once you get into the shiny-shiny it is easy to get lost and end up with tens of thousands worth of gear while not knowing what to do with them. You see many big money boomers "getting into the hobby" flaunting their gear once or twice then realize throwing money at fish won't get them out of the water and give up.
Decathlon rods are good quality most of the times, cheap shit from aliexpress is not. Don't know about the reels from Decathlon but I wouldn't touch aliexpress shit with a 10 foot pole.

Question, what would happen if I oversize the rod? I'm in the market for a new rod because... accident happened.
I mostly use lighter rapalas and some soft plastic jigs around 6-7g. my old rod was a 7g casting weight but I just can't find any medium-light in the shops, however there are 10-30g available. Will it give me problems casting lighter bait with a stronger rod is there no reason to worry about it?

Yeah I can absolutely see that. I’m very happy with with I’ve got now. Just two rods and a very simple tacklebox. If anything id be more inclined to putting my money towards a kayak or an aluminum with an outboard. In terms of getting a rod/reel that will last are there any brands that I should look in to? I only fish freshwater ponds and lakes. The main species I target are trout and bass, although there are plenty of bluegill, catfish, carp and tilapia in the areas I fish. Lots of unnecessary steps there. Just do a braid to leader knot (for smaller stuff a uni to uni is fine) the bullet weight on the leader, the bead is knot protection so the rubber stopper is redundant and then your hook.

Our rivers down south in California were blown open before halloween, but we ended up only catching salmon and since then the rivers have been either too clear and low or blown out. The difference between casting at the top end of one rod and the bottom end of another is more than you'd think. It'll still work, but if casting distance is a factor for the type of fishing you're doing then it will matter. For a spinning setup it'll be ok, but it's gonna suck if it's for a baitcaster.

For casting distance, yes. My rule of thumb is to buy a rod to fish at about 3/4 of the lure weight. So if a rod is rated 1-10g I try to fish something about 7g on it. If that makes sense.

That kind of selection is near impossible here, we are glad to have the medium-light, medium, medium-heavy options of which the 7-20g is the lightest, unless you go for the pole rods but that is for catching bait fish. Mostly we have overly hard rods for casting heavy weights (30-60g plus feed) for bottom feeding for carp and catfish
Maybe I'll try to weigh the baits a bit but that will also introduce other problems.
Thanks for the explanation, I could've googled all weekend for this kind of info.

Went fishing for the first time in my life in September, and I want to do more of it. The only problem is that I drive a small car and can't realistically fit a long fishing rod inside. If you actually want to move to the US, I suggest North Dakota, it too has german speaking enclaves, and it is actually a much more free place than Texas (texas is almost all private property, so while it's not as bad as the EU, because of American public waterway policies, it's still a confusing network of permissions needed to do things like hunt and fish. The only thing that Texas is good for is permissive rules about legal homocide. North Dakota has lots of public lands and far fewer mexicans/californians/texans (they are fundementally the same, it's just the clothes and accents that change).

But North Dakota is cold as fuck in the winter, hot in the summer, fairly dry, and pretty flat, so it can be a bit bleak if you're afraid of harsh winter weather. Texas is hot too, and can be dry in terms of precipitation, but is almost always humid as fuck, so I'd hate to live there.

And it's not like North Dakota girls are any lower class than Texan ones.

I used to think having too light a rod for the lures you use was worse... but having too stiff a rod is worse. especially when it comes to treble hook lures getting hit by fish. i'd rather do a lob cast with a heavy lure than have to whip a stiff rod hard as fuck to throw something light. Literally any cheap shit filet knife, assuming you know how to sharpen a knife correctly.

I have a bunch of the J. Martiini/Rapala knives and they are great, I've got a Benchmade cheapie that's fine too, and I've got a Leech Lake Custom fancy knife that is really nice to use, but honestly doesn't carve the fish up any better (it's just nicer in the hand and better to look at).

If you don't know how to sharpen a knife, just buy another Rapala/J. Marttiini knife every couple of years the way my old man did (which is why I've literally got 10+ of the damn things in my drawer). They've got a very servicable factory edge.

FG Knot is a waste of time if you're dealing with fishing around rocks or with fish with sandpaper mouths. Double uni knot is a lot better. Ain't no body got time for tying a knot like the FG during a tournament.

Carp rigs with live worm baits (but sometimes with wafter or floater balls as well in my experience) double as catfish rigs. Just use a braid line on the hook as you would do for carp to hide the hooked rig as mono lines tend to lead light like fiberoptics and carps are surprisingly smart with dubious looking baits.
Test after catching a catfish and if it looks okay just use it again. If it feels gritty or abraded then replace the hooked line. I usually keep a number of pre-made hooks in my box.

Uni to uni is shit. It's just easy to tie. FG just takes practice. I would suggest switching to the rizuto finish on the fg though. It's an easier lock than the standard method.

All shitposting aside, the reason an fg knot is so much stronger is because it doesn't bend or kink the leader at all and since the braided main line is typically higher test than the leader it has a higher breaking point. Also the load is being distributed on a larger area of the leader depending on how many weaves you do. It is pretty tricky to learn, but once you fully understand what's going on it is a lot easier/quicker to tie.

those lures are perfectly fine and will catch both pike and perch, its not uncommon for a big 10lb pike to eat one of those little lures so its important to use wire trace (i like to make homemade traces using savage gear raw 49 wire and it's matching savage gear crimps, a swivel on one end and a lure clip on the other end

the most important problem I will tell you is that we are in december, pike and perch are going to be so so sluggish and cold they will just ignore lures (but not always)

personally I wouldnt bother but if you really wanted to try catch perch in the winter (and even the spring they are pretty cold and unhungry) the best method is to retrieve the lure ultra slowly and basically crawl it along the water's bed

(btw are you fishing river or stillwater?)

7ft 10-30g telescopic is a perfectly fine rod its just not going to do so well with distance casting, I would also suggest a 15lb braid mainline

if you live close to the sea i would also suggest looking at targeting mackerel with that rod using those little spoons you have

I have no idea about hull, best thing to do is get the names of rivers then youtube/facebook search and see what people are pulling up, asking local tackle shops is also a good idea

staying comfortable is so important with fishing, if you arent comfortable and warm you are not going to have fun, and if you are not having fun why fish? get yourself some cheap handwarmers and some good fingerless gloves (imo '''fishing''' gloves are a fucking meme and offer zero warmth compared to normal ones) and half of your backpack should be based around clothing layers so you can change up your warmth on the fly

make sure you have some forcepts in your backpack for the occasional deep hooked pike, this is an extremely important bit of kit, can be found in every tackleshop and are fairly cheap

here's a speedy rendition of it. you tie a hook on to your main line, run the tag end through the hook eye, then attatch a weight to the tag end of the line. you can scale this rig up or down as far as you like, and bait it with soft plastic lures, or live bait.

then you can jiggle a little lure in one place quite a bit just by giving and taking slack, scaled up to monster hooks and big fish or scaled down to little 2cm rubber minnows on a #6 or #4 hook. if you have some dead minnows, nose hook one on a drop shot, you'll probably catch something. if you have live minnows, same thing. worms, grubs, crickets, grass hoppers, insect larvae, and just about anything else that is or was alive can be rigged this way.

Oof, I had a steel hook fail on me with a 30-40kg catfish. It sprang out right at the edge of the water, was about to grip him with my gripping hook. It looked at me with great disdain, unhooked itself and splashed me in the face. The hook sprang back but I never used it again. Also only used forged hooks after that.

I have a berkley naumad 4 piece rod. Doesn't really fit inside or outside my backpack. It takes longer to assemble than a telescopic rod and the fabric-bag-thing you put the pieces in is just another thing you might lose. Also I feel more confortable with a cheaper travel rod in case I break it.

Surfperch rod is a different setup than the rockfish/lingcod setup. My rockfish rod is an old narrow jigmaster filled with 50lb braid on a short graphite rod, you want capacity for deep rockfishing, at least here in socal. Perch fishing is a lot lighter and I would recommend a spinning rod, I don't like baitcasters in the surf cuz of the sand.

Hooks can be both widegap and offset. Widegap just means there's a lot of curve in the hook shape, so you can thread bigger plastics and larger fish can hook on easier.
Offset means the hook is canted to the side a little. If you place the hook on a table, if the hook is offset, it won't sit flush with the table. If it's not offset and just regular it should just lay flat.
Offset hooks can hook fish better, but they're illegal in some states. MD for instance only allows regular non-offset circle hooks for live bait.

Stocked trout tend to stay pretty close to where they were stocked, usually in the closest cover. Try casting near boat ramps, and any white turbulent water in the river.
If you are getting snagged, you should try using a slip bobber rig and set the leader shorter than the river depth. You will still get snagged I promise you, but less so. River fishing is snag city.

Not 100% positive, but I think it's to prevent guthooking fish. Guthooking a fish is pretty much game over for it, so if you fish offset hooks, supposedly you end up killing a bunch of small fish.

You're gonna be happiest with two set ups I think. Get a 4 weight and an 8 weight, the 4 weight will be for trout, panfish, dink bass, basically anything under 18 inches. Then practice casting on the lawn or in the park, then try fishing. Being able to cast makes the fishing experience 100x better.

OK, I was posting this stuff in the last thread and still haven't got anything. But I want a set up for fishing the jetties and shore (surf perch, rockfish, lingcod). It'd be cool to catch a salmon with it too.

I also want a set up for fishing alpine lakes in the summer when I'm hiking. Lastly, I want something for fishing small streams and rivers that I can pack when I'm not necessarily hiking/camping to fish.

I was thinking I'd get an 9' 8wt fly rod for salt, an 8'8" 4wt for lakes and the streams leading up to them, and a tenkara rod for bluelining.

Is that finally enough rods? I want absolutely as few as possible.

I mean you could split the difference and it'll work, but then you'll end up realizing why you want a lighter rod for the perch and a heavier rod for the rockfish/lings. Then you'll end up getting those setups and the first setup will gather dust. Are we talking socal or cen/norcal? Cuz admittedly the rockfishing from shore isn't really a thing down here, I would assume for that you'd want a swimbait setup for that.

northern oregon. A lot of blogs for fishing the surf for perch and rockfish/lings recommended an 8wt, but IDK.

thanks anon, I only really wanna fish to eat, so while a battle to catch it is fun, I don't really care so much if my 8wt is OP for surf perch for example. I do want to avoid forcing the fish to fight too much though in case I have to release them.

I think you'd like a fiberglass 4 weight, and a carbon 8 weight
A slow fiberglass 4 weight can still push 80 foot casts if you do your part and an 8 weight will pretty much handle anything you can handle on 17 pounds test

Conventional reels are good for 8 and bait but they're much less sealed than a high end spinning reel like a VS. If you're gonna be bait fishing from dry shore Conventional are great but if you're wading and casting artificials get a spinning reel. The real distance guys like conventionals without levelwinds for less resistance.

Conventional reels are a lot of fun to use, while fishing from land, a pier or a bridge or boat. Spinning Reels aren't 100% sealed anyone who believes for a minute that it's true is foolish. We found a 8000 Stella someone lost at a pier I fish at was on a nice star rod we opened up the reel it some how had just less then a shot glass of saltwater in it the washers showed now signs of damage some how after it being in the water for we guess might have been 3 days water did manage to get in that real.
Also I own a Van Staal VR200 with 42lbs or drag a damn 38 inch Snook was making that reel. Joke to own.

You got the poorfag VS, of course it isn't sealed. Even the new model VRs aren't fully sealed but there's a reason they're cheaper than a proper Van Staal. Either way spinning reel seals are leagues ahead of conventional reels.

Probably varies by state but up here in the nort'woods licesnse and stamps are dirt cheap and the dnr can and will fuck you for life. you really wanna deal with fines, losing your rights over the $5 that first time state resident fishing license in gonna cost you.

unrelated but did you know the dnr doesnt need a warrant or actual probable cause to search you or your property, they have more door kickin' authority than cops or most anyone government-wise
