I can say from bbwarzing that they are handy because you end up with your knees on hard surfaces and then shifting your weight on to them a lot (getting up from kneeling, leaning out to shoot). However it's telling that most shooty guys do not wear them on travel.
Internal knee pads are the better option if you're going to be traveling with them. The dead bird ones you have shown are the comfiest and imo best external but I would not want to hike with them on if I could get away without it.
If you just want something to kneel on while setting up camp or making fires or whatever, find an old yoga pad and cut a smaller, packable pad out of it.
