I can tell you I've used a 65L in a single overnight, no problems at all. Also did another in the same conditions with the same gear using a 35L bag, worked flawlessly too.
In a single overnighter, bulk and weight of the backpack literally do not matter as long as he can tighten the straps to make the load not bounce around.
You also don't know the conditions or the gear the OP has.
If he lives (or is going /out/) in cold places the gear will be way bulkier, if he goes out in a place where it doesn't snow and doesn't go below 5ºC, the bulk of the gear will be different.
If he has cheap shit, in winter, 30-40L most probably ain't gonna cut it for the bulk he'll have. (I'm discounting the option of strapping half of your shit on the outside of the pack)
