How do you stay dry and cover miles in the rain when it rains all day everyday? If I get a 100% waterproof jacket, I sweat too much and my insulation gets ruined. If I don't wear a 100% waterproof jacket, the rain gets through and my insulation gets ruined.

Is a poncho the only way? I thought those were more like emergency blankets not something you'd wear when planning on hiking in rain.

get a waterproof bag over your pack and a poncho over you. Not too difficult an idea; if you dont like the idea wait until it's not raining to go for a walk

COLD rain by the way, coupled with freezing nights, not tropical stuff where it's no big deal. I bought Frog Toggs and tried running in the rain and got way too sweaty so I had to take them off. I'm trying to plan a hiking trip during the rain but don't wanna change my clothes constantly. My insulation layer was gonna be a thin down layer, but I now see this is incompatible with a hard shell rain coat.

I could try switching to fleece, but really it seems like a poncho tarp (so I can tighten it up if I get cold) has minimal disadvantages, given that I'm not bushwacking and won't be snagging on stuff.

I just a poncho in the mail, and I was gonna with liners around stuff that can't get wet. I just thought ponchos were more backup plans, not pieces of equipment you plan on using. But with how much I sweat, I don't know how else I'd keep my insulation dry, unless I walked at a snails pace (in which case, may as well wait out the rain instead).

So poncho it is? What do you think about using an 8'x4.33' flat tarp as a poncho? Sorta like a plash palatika or this https://www.angelfire.com/my/zelime/howto.html#cloak

alternatively, you could try to go for a light and waterproof windbreaker. That way it breathes but keeps you dry

I'm thinking about this too, but a wind breaker would wet my insulation, so I could only really use it if I was warm enough to go without, and if I'm warm enough to forego insulation, then I don't really have a problem anymore anyway.

So it seems like the only solutions are a) a poncho/umbrella, b) rain jacket and taking my insulation on or off accordingly, or c) walking so slow that I don't sweat. I didn't really realize what a tough problem this was until today. I've worked in the cold rain/snow before, but I always came home to a warm set of new clothes, and could just deal with being wet/cold. It seems like there's no good solution here, so I feel like I'm missing something.

I'll try my poncho tarp out tomorrow, it just arrived today too.

Thanks, that's almost exactly like the poncho I bought (mines polyurethane and polyester, not sure what that one is), similar price too. Was too fun of a deal to pass up.

Well, I just read all of Andrew Skurka's stuff on it, and it seems like there's really no good answer. I can change my insulation layer to something that holds up better in wet conditions, like wool or fleece instead of down, but it sounds like aside from that I'm basically understanding the situation.

Guess I'll be trying a bunch of different stuff out this winter and seeing what works best to mitigate it. Luckily I run pretty warm and can probably get away with lighter, quicker drying layers.

what about if there's a big windstorm? I got a poncho tarp so I could at least tie it down to myself but I'm not sure if it'll actually work. At any rate, I'm gonna be going out during every storm and trying different stuff. I got an umbrella, poncho tarp, tarp, and rain jacket with ventilation so I'm excited to figure out what works best in practice in various conditions. I've only ever fair weather camped/hiked before.

I've owned 9 ponchos in my life, and not a single one of them is good. The closest to """good""" I've used is the Snugpak one, but I still had to modify it so it would work in strong weather conditions such as annoying wind.

Ponchos always fall into this shit:
>short "skirt"
>short arm length
>no arm/hand velcro
>no adjustable hood
>too small for layers
>tearing in just 1-30 days
>no mid-rif retention
>no leg straps for wind, which i added to my snugpak
>shitty pockets, or no pockets at all

modifying it yourself is the key, fuck standard issues ponchos

but anyway, the real question is how to prepare yourself to stay warm when your insulation gets wet? down is famous for collapsing for example, and fires aren't always possible, no matter how much posturing you wanna do, that's a ridiculous reliance on an improbable occurrence imo. not to mention, my plan A is moving despite rain/cold, not starting a fire.

The solution is synthetic for temps near freezing, and to protect your static insulation layer (sleeping bag primarily) like your life depends on it. If you get too cold, set up or find shelter and hunker. If its that near freezing hopefully you have something to make hot water and start warming yourself back up

I live in FL, grew up in South FL where it rains just about every day in the summer. I always keep a poncho when I know I'm going to be traveling on foot for an extended time. The wind kicks up and drives the rain under umbrellas and stuff so I grew to love ponchos. If you get one with grommets, you can also use it to make a shelter in a pinch, although I've never needed to. They pack down light and have decent circulation. I don't know how well it would work if you had to wear it constantly, but I find them very useful.

Even with the best gore tex gear, you'll still get a little damp. Sorry.
No fabric is truly waterproof. Before you have fabric problems, water will enter via your waist, wrists, neck, and internally from sweat. The best you can do is try not to sweat by managing layers properly, and tough it out. Just remember that even if you're a little damp, you'll still be warm and dry enough. And that's the point of weather layers anyways.
