If you pay 350 or 3.50 for a first sewing machine that is silly. You probably are looking at news ones, too

Sew/Vac shops are like used car dealers. When I was looking for a machine, I went to one local place, told them my budget ($300ish), they showed me a bunch of machines, when I finally asked the guy for the nth time how much these cost, his reply was "This base model is $750". Bad vibe from that place.
Next shop was MUCH better. Gal actually listened, asked what I wanted out of it, made a few recommendations. I bought a real low-end refurb machine for about $100. Wish I had listened to her recommendations and spent a little more on a step-up that had a few more features.

If you're planning on sewing slippery materials (nylon, cordura, synthetics, etc... get a machine that has a top and bottom feed dog. Mine only has the bottom and I get inconsistent stitches especially with pack cloth.
Another feature I wish I had is a needle-retract button. It's not that big of a deal to roll the knob half a turn, but it'd be nice to press a button right by the presser foot lever.

Get one from a charity shop first. You should be able to score one for $10

Forget about features like fancy stitches and buttonholes, all you need is straight and sometimes zigzag stitch.

First thing when you get it is to oil it. Use thin oil. There are small marked holes in the case where you place a drop of oil which drips on a crankshaft inside.

If you're making your own gear you might be sewing thick material like canvas. You can do this but you might break a needle. Use a sharp new needle and don't force the material through.

Using tissue paper definitely helps feed very slippery fabrics so the stitches aren’t all loose

NTA, but it's a lightweight fabric.
You're not ripping it, you're just passing a needle between the fibers/threads.

Nah it wasn’t difficult. Kinda made a pop when the needle would go through.
The Singer simple managed to do pic rel, so it’s tough enough for anything I need.
Yes, I know pic rel looks like shit, but I need up painting the seams with fabric glue to ensure it all stays tight
