I just bought a stove and a stove jack for my tepee tent.

Anyone have any experience hot tenting? Would you recommend having a CO monitor inside the tent?

The stove is a tiny titanium folding firebox, so I'm sure the fires inside won't last more than an hour or so, so what kinda tips do you guys have for making the heat inside last longer?

Why? Tents are so leaky co will never build up to lethal levels. Also any co generated will be hot and go straight up the stovepipe or out the top vent. Just don't sleep with your head in a pit. I refommend a cot for winter camping anyways.

My stove is a 12"x8"x8", with the damper adjusted and a baffle installed it is easy to get 3hrs of heat. You can use rocks / water to store heat and slowly release it too.

People die all the time from CO in tents.
Usually it's because they were retarded and brought a propane heater or stove inside or something, but any combustion creates CO, it's odorless and colorless and won't wake you up before it kills you. A CO detector doesn't weigh much, costs relatively little and will wake you up before you die. If you're going to burn anything while in an enclosed space it's a good idea to have one.

OP, I have a tipi with a stove, you don’t need a CO detector. Once the fire in the stove goes out, you’re going to want that heavy sleeping bag. Because it’s going to get cold as fuck.

CO detecters are cheap and a good insurance policy in case you fuck up your set up or have a faulty stove. Advising someone to skip the safety precaution is high-tier shitbrain thinking especially since its such a small expense with such a large potential downside otherwise.

There is 0 danger of co poisoning unless 1) your tent is a plastic bag. and 2) The stovepipe is missing or you set it up pointing down somehow.

Idk how to tell you this, but if the stovepipe can just fall off you probably need a new stove. If you set it up without a stovepipe or with the pipe end below the stove (so air flows in the pipe and out the stove due to the mechanics of hot air rising), you deserve to die so keep on keeping on.

Any suggestions for the tent itself? I'm ranging anywhere from $300 Amazon "hot tents" and 1k+ army duck canvas. I briefly toyed with using an Ozark trail thing but I don't want to die in a mess of burnt plastic.

How many people do you want to sleep in it? Do you want to be on a cot or on the ground? I have an 8 man tipi. When I have the stove I can fit two cots or four people on the ground.

i bought one, had it with me the first few times. in different weather conditions, i especially wanted to know about dead quit wind where, if i did adjust for wind direction at all, and had all ports closed, didnt even get remotely close to a BEEP!
it also shows time, can set an alarm and shows temperatures, it weights half a beer so i just keep it in for that "one time" shit some how goes wrong, odorless gas is no joke, trust me

the thing is not necessarily about making it last longer, its about making it into radiating coal for longer, which ofcourse is dependent on the wood you have, but, developing the "zombie feeding" just happens when you get comfortable with your stove, where you basically sleepwalk feed it, that what i do

How do you approach camping in cold weather with a stove, specifically in terms of what temperatures you can tackle? I have 20 degree gear that I have slept in comfortably (without the stove) in 23-25F weather. With the stove; should I stick to the same range? Or will the stove enable me to camp in slightly colder weather without feeling uncomfortable?

I wanted to try maybe doing single digit temperatures but if it's foolish with my current 20 degree gear then I would rather not. Thanks.

no matter how good your gear is it will get damp and you will get cold and that stove will enable you to dry said gear efficiently

I've been using a kifaru tipi for a few years now and I absolutely love it. I recently got this luxe hercules and am very excited to try it out. only set it up in the backyard so far but it's free-standing, extremely heavy duty (car camping only sadly), and you can stand up 4 adults insude.

have had the tipi out in negatives and been totally cozy, hoping it's the same here. seems to be pretty sturdy for snow load as well

i've done it down to like -15F and it's fine, you just have to make sure to keep the stove running all night because it gets cold as FUCK when it goes out. don't skimp on sleeping bags, assume the worst and pack accordingly

Any thoughts on the different Tepee tents? It's about as simple as it can be, from the outside. Is there a particular reason to go one way or the other or just get the one that you can get a deal on and get camping?

We have been using a cabin style tent (and I hate the entire style). It's started leaking at the front and I'm ready to just buy a tepee and declare it the new normal, It's always a little nerve wracking to spend over a grand at a time.

OK, what company actually makes the folding titanium portable stove? I can't find anything on '3w' in korea. I live in Japan and want to buy it because it looks light and compact but they have none of this shit. I would buy it on a trip to Korea, but I cannot find a retailer there either.

The kifaru is basically the gold standard of lightweight backpackable tipis. my 8 man tipi and the large folding stove comes out to like 18lbs or so total weight, so not terrible if you split it up between a couple people.

luxe makes a more substantial one that has more creature comforts, but it's heavier. I love my tipi but it's a pain in the ass to set up in snow because you need to have it staked down (it's not freestanding). I'd say if you're going to be hiking/sledding into your camp, go kifaru. if you're going to be mainly car camping, then get the luxe.

I was considering the 6 person tipi, but doing that and 4 people in the inner with a stove seems hard. I need the inner because bugs here are bad until it it’s midday below freezing weather. A fall hot tent still wants an inner. Also the inner for the tipi would have to split. What do you guys think for a 4 person lightweight hot tent, with inner bug net, and room for a stove? That 3w stove is sexy tho. What do you do for a rain cover on the top?

I also own a kifaru 8 man. I went with that company because it’s all US made, local to me, and is light enough to pack into the back country with my family. I believe kifaru is in the works of coming out with an updated stove. So keep an eye open for that. Idk what they have changed.

A thing to consider with a tipi and cots is that because the sides are angled so much, you will lose a lot of useable floor space. So keep that in mind. Also the larger the stove, the less you have to keep putting wood in.

For the guy bitching about stove pipe length, the thing rolls up very small. So idk what the fuck you’re talking about.

yeah imo once you start going above 3 people, or bring cots into the equation, i'd start looking at tents with more vertical walls or bell tents. the canvas tents from canvascamp and snowtrekker are nice even if heavy, but if you're camping with a bunch of people the weight can be divided amongst everyone

You could maybe squeeze 3 people in a luxe megahorn with a stove if you're all cool with getting comfy with each other. Other than that I'm not sure you'll find a tent to fit 4 people and not fall apart after 3 uses for $300

Anon, I know -5C isn't even jacket weather but you should always bring sleeping gear that's warm enough without the stove. Just sleep on top when the stove is going.

FYI I got one of those cheap $120 two person hexapod tents and it's served well into it's fourth year no problems. Had to do the seam sealing myself tho, but you should anyways.
