How do I stay warm but keep my pack light?

Here's what I've tried,
>Mummy sleeping bag
>Tarpaulin Pup tent
>Fully clothed w/ hat and jacket underneath

I live in the south east, so it only really gets down to the 30s and 40s at night this time of year, but I was so cold I couldn't get to sleep. Maybe I'm just a lil bitch, but how to I keep warmer, preferably without adding too much weight to my setup?

you're missing an insulated sleeping pad
i've slept in the 4 corners area in the upper teens
setup is:
-2 person tent for me and dog
-tent floor (like a foldable rug to prevent the dog from tearing the tent fabric on the floor, folds to notebook size, fits in backpack water bladder pocket, r value is 2)
-sleeping pad (self inflatable thermarest trail pro r value is 4.4)
20 degree mummy bag (kelty cosmic)

if it drops below the teens i usually add another ccl foam sleeping pad like a z-lite sol which adds another 2 points of R value

u wanna add up the r values of both your sleeping pads and make it to at least 6 if you're gonna be sleeping in freezing temps (low 30s)

Ditch the larp tent. Get an actual tent. Put the rain cover on. Get a small tarp/tent mat to lay down beneath your tent if the ground is wet or will be wet. You are in the southeast, so in your case, the ground is always wet. Get a nice sleeping pad with an r value rated for winter, so 4.5+, and a foam cell pad. Foam cell pad goes on the floor of your tent, nice pad goes on top. Bag goes on top of that. You, in your clothes, with your beanie on your head, go into the bag. Ignore larpers like >>2270862, don't buy Kelty; it's cheap shit they sell at Walmart. Buy a decent bag.

Those are for emergencies. They retain heat. I always tell my students that if you ever have to use one, you are going to regret every decision that led up to that point.

That's like normal spring/fall temperatures
A regular tent, a thermarest z-lite, and any 20F sleeping bag are more than enough for that.

Long time ago I worked ad a cattlehand in the arse end of nowhere keeping an eye on two year olds and got paid well enough as I was ahorse man two an he had an eye for the horses and used give me them to make fit to ride (I don;t like the bork break as my way is to sleep with the foal beside me afted its weaned and by a yearling its follwing me around like a dogger full of bounce and be kind so as the animal comes to love man as a friend, all gone now with fucking pony club types and cunts with whips beating teh shit into them ) anyways I used have sheepskins a big old oil tarp and and silk sheet and what I'd do was peg the tarp and have the sheepskin under and over and a wool blaket with a line in the hem to pull the lot light over me but it dot bad enough during winter like so I would light a big fat candle sitting in a jar with the top open to keep the air warm so as I did not get the cough (its that cold air that will kill you if you get a cough and weaken). I used have a nip of whiskey and tuck in and that was it and I did a winter where it was as bad a -20 for weeks. That was when I was young though and you'll all make fun of me but people were tougher back then from more labor and that. I've had a nip of whiskey for Christmas eve and come here and I'm in my late 70s and worked all over out doing cattle and sheep and horse and that most of my life

O and aye the silk is layer under the tarp and not pegged but died down to the tarp corners so as it keeps the warmth in on the inside.

O and eat well if its cold as you need it. What made that winter for me was one of them 2 year old bust a leg after the snow was in and was fucked so I shot it as I had no help with it (you can plaster and head a bullocks leg but now without someone else although they will be 'hoppy' every after) and it kept well in the cold and I had my cuts off it for three week but you need good solid food for your belly in the winter when you are out in it.
