Tip 1. Get a compass that has adjustable declination. If it doesn’t have adjustable declination, it’s junk. Even good manufacturers like Suunto offer shitty introductory compasses that don’t have declination adjustment.

Tip 2. After you get your compass, set the declination on it in according to where you live. Where I hike, it’s +13 degrees. That’s a lot.

Tip 3. Learn how to use your compass in conjunction with a map. I prefer paper maps, so that I have an analog backup in case my phone dies. Learn how to orient yourself on your map with your compass and various landmarks, such as peaks and waterways.

Tip 4. Learn how fast you move over various types of terrain. Most people know how fast they walk, so they can know how far they’ve gone if they’ve timed their travel. However, most people might not necessarily know how fast they move over rough terrain, or uphill in the sun, or through dense brush, etc.; if you make 3 miles per hour on a light easy hike, you might only make 1 mile per hour moving over rough scree. If you need more precision, make ranger beads. They’re very easy to use, and only cost about five bucks to make.

Once you know your starting location, your heading, your time of travel, and your pace, you can determine exactly where you are.

The Harbin DQ-8 is on my "to get list.". Not because I need it but because it's sexy and I can use it to teach kids land navigation with.
I keep picrel on my pack normally. Most of the terrain on my hikes is either easy to spot through the trees or at my feet.
I have all the maps for where I hike (laminate lads) and I usually have a Garmin with me for emergencies... although the only time I ever use it is when I'm ocean fishing and fog rolls in.

Why would you not just use alltrails and your phone (with a backup battery and optionally a backup personal rescue beacon)?

Why waste time using a paper map and compass when smartphones have built in gps chips and can easily load maps for offline use?

I'd rather enjoy my trail than worry about doing math.

What's fun is being able to choose any trail I want last minute without having to worry about needing a paper map. I can go anywhere as long as I quigly take the time to download the offline map layers I want in alltrails.

I don't have to do math because I instantly know where I am even with no cell service and I have a battery backup and a PLB if shit hits the fan.

When I go hunting or off-roading, the fire roads we take aren’t on all trails, nor are they on Google maps.

if you too ever decide to leave the trail, or go somewhere actually remote where you won’t have an opportunity to charge your phone for an extended period, you should probably learn how to read a map and use a compass

What no I'm saying that it doesn't matter if there's a .gpx file (which is what alltrails is displaying or not) you can still know where you are if you have the maps downloaded ahead of time. You can make custom maps of whatever area you like on alltrails, trail or not.

Fire roads are probably on the topo map layer and you can download that onto alltrails.

I bring a backup charger that can charge my phone many times over.

I don't understand how you are this confused. Whether there is a marked trail or not or it is in the alltrails system as a curated trail is irrelevant. What matters is downloading the offline maps to your phone when you have cell signal - then it will work to look at the maps with NO cell signal on your phone and the phone's gps chip tells you exactly where you are on the map.

no, no they are not

Here’s a piece of property that belongs to a family friend. You’ll note from the google maps picture that if you zoom in, there’s the slightest hint of a 4x4 trail in the circled area. There are dozens of other such 4x4 paths in the area, ones that you can’t see on google.

I'm going to repeat this one last time - you can load the usgs topo layer in alltrails. Even on private property - typically fire roads and jeep trails and such are marked.

I'm not sure if any of these are what you mean but if something appears on a paper top map its generally gonna show up on alltrails topo layer unless you mean its just unmarked fire roads which don't appear on any map and even then you don't need a physical compass cuz ur phone has a digital one if that is your point.

Again, all trails pulls from the USGS database. The 4x4 paths are not on the official government survey, and hence they are not on all trails. If you want to navigate these paths, you would do well to fucking buy a paper map and take a sharpie to it to mark them.

There is no layer on all trails that will tell you every path that exists. There is no layer on google maps that will tell you every path that exists. There is no database that you can download. Sometimes, where you’re actually /out/, you might literally need to map it yourself, or learn it by heart.

Knowing where you are on your GPS means nothing if you don’t know the paths that connect to your location, because you’re not a fucking bird who can just fly in any direction he wants. Again, you’ll never have to worry about this because you don’t go anywhere, but others might.

Most logging roads around here are in the usgs topo layer of alltrails. It's interesting to me in many cases they still mark them as an official numbered trail even if they haven't been used/maintained in decades on the topo maps.

You can literally mark your own trails I think even with alltrails now but I usually just do it in caltopo because for some reason I find the topo maps are faster to load and easier to browser on their website.

But using your phone is generally advantageous outside of certain extreme situations (pouring rain, very cold).

Some people here genuinely think you can't load topo maps easily on your phone and track your position in real time - and you can - and should be doing that.

If you want to argue you are a hobbyist who enjoys antique toys and uses a compass and paper map as such - that I get - but its not the best method.

Download the alltrails and usgs topo layer for any trail you want to do - or just the general area as a custom map if you aren't doing a trail/aren't doing a trail on alltrails - turn on airplane mode when u start hiking - that's about it.
