They were in Daisetsuzan National Park, which is the largest wilderness area in Japan, and depending on where they were they could face dense shrub thicket and steep mountains. Back in those days the park was almost completely wild and the trails were poorly maintained so it doesn’t surprise me that they would get lost.

Print maps, topo and images. Understand how a compass works.
Mark off some cell towers and mountain peeks so you can always triangulate your location ( not aplicable in flat places)

I saw a whole video on this. Basically wrong turn, got lost in canyon. There were some hangups and older signs or something, but essentially it was a common wrong turn and getting lost area.

Japanese undergrowth in summer season is insane and like a jungle so I understand why theey had a hard time navigating.

Why would you go to all of the hassle of triangulating your location when any recent smartphone has a gps chip that can tell you exactly where you are on a pre-downloaded map, with no cell service?

Your phone has a compass but you don't need it as long as you have the maps downloaded to your phone.

I got lost and my phone gps worked but I wasn't anywhere near a cell tower so I just saw a blue pulsing dot. When I expanded the pic it looked like this. I thought "that's weird" then I hiked up as high as I could and finally saw lights, it got dark.

Yeah you need to download the maps ahead of time in google maps or whatever app you use as well as the layers you want in alltrails or a similar app so you have the map overlaid with the blue dot while you walk.

Then the blue dot has a triangle that sticks out that points which direction on the map you are heading.
