>>2276129You won't be doing 85 on some parts of 48 unless you want to die or have a v8 sportscar.
Anyways, 48 goes perpendicular THROUGH the mountains, 81 largely runs parallel.
Here's some stuff nearish to Elkins:
Little black fork trailhead:
38.9825, -79.7296
Gaudineer knob:
38.6153727, -79.84418809
Baker sods road (lower approach)
38.9748, -79.7523
Baker sods trail (upper approach)
38.9387, -79.7242
Little black fork is an abandoned logging road/recreation trail that runs along a small tributary.
Also, McGowan Mt Road - which takes you to the yellow creek trailhead and you can connect into trails there or at moore run (i suggest yellow creek unless ur really looking for high adventure) - mcgowan mt rd (forest road 324) is seasonally gated but its open in winter!
if you get off 48 in parsons u can access it via the fernow experimental forest. Nifty area back there and the forest road drops you off right into the backcountry.
Also Bickle Knob there's a tower that's an easy climb with a panoramic view
we drive slowly and I manually shift the automatic transmission in the mountains
gaudineer knob has a short trail to a great view and then you have to drive over to a different trail for the actual old growth forest and nearby you can connect into the long distance allegheny trail I think
