The population keeps growing, more plots of land are bought up to turn into cheap housing, etc. It just keeps happening with no end in sight and there's nothing I can do about it.

I take solace in the fact that our current human impact is very easily erased by nature if it's left to do its thing. Human conservation efforts focus on preserving a narrow snapshot of the world as we know it. The flora and fauna of the world have been and will continue to do their thing long after were gone. Do your best to reduce you impact, support efforts to densify and improve urban areas (keeps the city people IN the city) rather than let them sprawl and encourage others to do the same without acting like some preaching vegan.

Buy land and re-wild as much of it as you can. You can design your property to have as much habitat value as true nature. Get deadfall trees from public land, stack rocks for critters, plant native trees, till the lawn and replace it with wild grasses, etc. Proslatize how important it is to anyone who will listen.
