I've always fantasized about having a little secret cozy dugout/bunker in the woods and youtube recommended a video like that to me without me ever having searched for anything to do with survivalism or bushcraft. Spooky.

Anyone actually done it? Can you recommend some good designs?

Never done it myself but you should definitely reinforce the walls and make sure the roof is waterproofed like a motherfucker.

Do you think a thick sloped roof work or would a tarp be better to try keep water out or both? Gonna try make one next week.

sloped roof with tarp is clearly better. but if you going for traditional feel, sloped roof covered with leaves.

On public lands, yeah. If you're on private property do whatever you want. Buy 5-10 acres, have 1-2 acres cleared and build your home, leave the rest wooded and have your happy little hole in the ground. Or just use it as a root cellar for your taters.

Inherited some land out in the prairie and have been looking to make my own dug outs all over my property. Hard to find advice/guide that fits my terrain.

I’m actually in a position to do this. We have a 3.5 acre lot we just bought adjacent to our extant property, with a good amount of hills.

After seeing this thread I might just have to dig out a root cellar. Keeping the roof from collapsing is the tricky bit though- just reinforced with pressure treated lumber I’d wager?

I went camping the other day in Southern Europeand it is winter and the tent was over a terrain yet this did not avoid dozens of spiders, and other bugs. Even mice did holes around.

In summer, there are millions of ants, spiders, and lots of other bugs. Also most bugs make their nests underground to pass winter.

So, the possible little benefits are out considering just the bug problem
