Rock Collecting while Out

No rock or mineral thread.
Used to be people collected and processed what they found.
No one likes bolo ties anymore.
Smokey quartz from Crystal Ridge, west side of Owens Valley. Amethyst is from the Mile High claim in the Kingston Range east of Tecopa.

What is the purpose of carrying a rock home, and what are the rocks with the lowest weight and volume to achieve that purpose? Asking for the ultralight community.

If you can find opal thats your best bet for lightest, there are some very dense minerals as well but you probably wouldnt come across them unless you frequent abandoned mines and quarries.

lots of rocks out there. Very much fewer minerals. fewer still are crystallized. For a crystal of a mineral to survive formation and exposure by whatever process is rare.
So if you are ultraliting, keep only crystals, If theres alot of crystals, keep one or two of the finest.
No one ultralites petrified wood lol

Most collecting localities have been exploited for many years.If I have to dig a hole in a previously disturbed location to find a nice something, How am I depriving you of the beauty of nature? I'm exposing it. The rock club I was in put on a show every year, free to the public, to show what they had found on mostly public land. We were always willing to talk locations and give tips to getting out. Planned field trips and gave talks at local schools to get kids interested.
Minerals of value get claimed. Life's a bitch, worse without good conductors to bring your "green" energy to you.

Nevada has probably the finest opal in America in the Virgin Valley in the northwest corner. Hot water springs and pools in the area also, some built by the Conservation Corps in the 30's.
It would be more commercial but for the fact much of the opal from there is unstable. The stuff that is stable sells for alot.
This is a limb section petrified in black opal from there.

Missed the first part of your question, why carry a rock home. I would advice you not to. It can ruin your life.
But say you meet a rock out in the wilderness somewhere.
It may intrigue you and you want to consider it further.
You may recognize it as something rare or valuable in and of itself. A meteorite. A crystal. A log.
It may be an ugly rock, but you think you can save it.
It's a bigger rock than your neighbor has.
You need more yard rocks. Everyone does.
You are a filthy hoarding POS with extra room.
You know that if you dont take that rock someone else will.
You're tired of spending hours stacking rocks in your favorite public land only to find some insensitive lout has destroyed your efforts, so you stack at home out of sight from the street?
I guess everybody has to answer that for themselves.

I do too. It's the pain of being born to late, right? And think about it, only by a couple hundred years here in America.
Do you get out looking for rocks? Do you hike in areas with historic mining?
I'm as offended as anyone with the environmental destruction from irresponsible mining.
Rock collecting is a legal activity on most public land. If you dig a hole you fill it in.

Got this from a old rockhound selling his collection for donations. Barely legible label says its from Globe, Az.

Appears to be a form of Asbestos, most likely Chrysotile, on a common opal matrix.

The nearest 'town', Tecopa used to have a restaurant called the Miner's Dinner, got business from rockhounds and mines from talc and metal mines in the area. It was open into the late 80's. Couple of talc mines at the head of Sperry Wash with a comfy tin can dump w a couple rusted car bodies from the 40's and earlier.
Precious opal location across hwy 128 from Tecopa, occurs in the middle of mud concretions in the low hills in the area. Camp just about anywhere.
Tecopa is also known as Tecopa Hot Springs. county used to maintain sex-segregated bathing facilities. Dont know if anymore.
Also when in the area stop by China Ranch Date Farm for a date shake.
A chinaman used to grow vegetables back in the 1800's to sell to the miners in the area. Lot of gypsum was mined there also. All of a sudden, one day, the chinaman was gone and a white man was running the place. Never did hear where the chinaman got to.......

Always thought that Millerite geode location in Iowa would be fun to visit...And there's some Iron Range minerals in Minnesota...

Granite can be tough mostly intrusive bodies I think that get exposed by uplift and erosion? When you do get mineralization it's a hard rock proposition.
Pegmatite formations form in cores of granite bodies, they can give up beautiful stuff. I spent alot of energy chasing tourmaline in southern California at one point in my life, never did any good.... picrel, scraps of green tourmaline, purple lepidolite, smoky quartz, schorl, garnet, from across southern Ca. As close as I ever got to colored tourmaline in the wild.

There's lots of little pocket guides out there that can give you a basic understanding. It's harder I think to find gems and minerals than it is to identify them.
There is a relationship between the type of geological setting you may be in and the type of minerals you may find. Rockhounds generally identify an area with a rock type of interest, and go looking for it. There are historic localities that have put out really good stuff in the past that people tend to go to, and sometimes get lucky. Not all the diamonds at that state park in Arkansas come from India, and I've found really good stuff in several areas the oldtimers thought were depleted.
If you're planning a hike for other interests, a little research into the geology of the area may help you to know what you may find.

It's against a rock's nature to go uphill. Rocks are always seeking that lower potential. I always try and leave rocks at a higher entropy than I found them, keeps 'em happy.

Common answer is you can look at hardness, color, shape. If it's a crystal, shape will usually put you close. Ahem, 'the external shape is an expression and manifestation of the internal arrangement of the atomic structure'. Hardness can be "hard" to determine, some minerals leave distinctive streaks on porcelain. A blowpipe can be a pretty definitive method in the field, but who does blowpipes anymore.
If you know the area and know what you're looking for, shouldn't be too hard.

I called and spoke to one of the original finders of this iron im the late 90's....Twenty years later and he was so made he could barely talk about it. They actually called the Smithsonian trying to get advice and help.

Work at JPL in Pasadena, hear of people exploiting dry lake beds in the Mojave for meteorites. Give it a try, find two meteorites from Mars. Realizing they were found on BLM land, and knowing the old woman story, he claims the discovery location to be a box in his backyard where he tossed them twenty years ago, just cant remember exactly where.
Sell for over a million dollars, ride fame to enhance career.
