I'm making a knife in my down time, out of an old file, in a PJLT style. Its mostly done, just need to re-temper it and put the handle.
Process so far has been fairly smooth. It has gone as follows.
>Throw file in burn barrel kind of thing, 1/4 in steel tube with an open top and bottom, gets glowing red hot.
>Retrieve file Two days later, hammer it flat again because warped.
>Draw up an template
>Grind the rough outline, hand file the final details
>Bench grind the basic face
>Belt sand the rest of the way (should have belt sanded it the whole way, did not realize how worn down my belt was until i picked up a new one)
>Drill holes for brass rods in handle
And that's what I'm up to. Started cutting some cherry wood down for the handle (have two or three decent sized trunks drying out for the last few months, unfortunately its started splitting, might have to switch to hickory).
Will re-temper it Friday night
Will Take pictures tomorrow if requested.
Only Pic related i have, the barrel i tossed the file in.
