E-tools are fine. They are heavy and cumbersome though, and for normal camping, completely unnecessary. For poop holes in the ground you'd be better off with a garden showel that is compact and weighs next to nothing.
But if you know that are digging trenches or dikes for your tent in case of rain, then an e-tool would be justified. I have an old swedish army milsurp e-tool (from the 80s) in my car. It weighs a lot but is essentially undestroyable. I wouldn't go backpacking with it due to its cumbersome nature. I also have a current issue e-tool of the Finnish defence forces, made by Fiskars, and it is a lot more packable and lighter, but you lose in usability then.

The current one looks like the one the US military gets, the Gerber with the plastic handle. I was never a huge fan of that one. I’ve seen ones similar to the Finnish one.
I was thinking of purchasing one that was made by CRKT but I wanted to second hand opinions first.

Well, it is one of those things that does confuse people who are talking in a foreign language. In my language there is only one word for shovel no matter the size and it could mean both trowel and a showel. Thus, the use of a "small showel". I admit that it is my bad. It has been a long time since highschool and my vocabulary has steadily decreased by every year due to not actively learning and using English. I will use the word trowel now though.

Anyways, this thread has made me want to purchase a Soviet/Russian MPL-50 or a clone of it for autism and larping pirposes. Is the Cold Steel version as good as the product that it is copying? They claim that the original MPL-50 can be used as an axe, as a skillet, for hand to hand fighting, digging, throwing and as a measuring tool.

If you do need one for some reason you're better getting one with a fixed handle or simple single folder, the 3 piece NATO shovel seems to fail after a while.

Digging a shell scrape with a folding spade sucks never mind a trench, I guess being under idf sucks more though.

On eBay you can get a Russian titanium one for like 35-40 bucks. It weighs under a pound. Takes like 3 months to get to you though. Same guy makes titanium trowel heads etc with holes in them. I’m not a ultralight kind of guy but I try and keep my extras to a minimum but I won’t go out anymore without it. From poking the fire to taking a shit to potentially clubbing something to death it’s just good to have.

Mine is currently a 1500 miles away. I'm on a consultation job. I actually don't have this brand, mine is a 60 year old hand-me-down. The horizontal top handle is what makes it good. Mine is the same size but wider and the handle is red. I also have a meme fold out Gerber but old woodie gets used way more.

It's the size and design that make it very usable.

But those modern mini shovels are complete crap if you want them to last.
Great to have in the car to get it unstuck. To have in the garden for the raised beds. Even to strap to the backpack for some innawoods light duty digging.

Anyone use these before? Don't care about brand a bunch of people make them. Seems like it would offer better rigidity than a garden trowel but also be heavy enough to dig small pits and things easier.

They make small shovels out of plastic, so I'm sure it would hold up to the reasonable tasks you would ask of it. The advantage to titanium is just for when you hike with it. If you keep it in the car or use in the yard, the steel is good enough.

i have the first one of this pic.

its stamped US Ames 1944, my grandpa picked it up during WW2 when he was a kid. he used it as garden shovel for his whole life.

only problem is that you cant fold it anymore since there is concrete in the screw part.

if it was steel i would have used muriatic acid. since it dissolves concrete, steel to but slower than concrete.

but i actually got if loose a few hours ago, i soaked it in ATF a few days ago. after 4chin remembered me of that i carefully twisted the nut with a pipe wrench and managed to slowly work it loose.

DO NOT get a plastic trowel like that. When i was a gardener, my boss (who had no experience gardening) gave every employee one of those Fiskars trowels to always carry around. They simply don't go into tough soil. The smallest roots stop them, and if you awkwardly try to push down with your boot, the damn thing breaks.
They are completely useless for anything except putting holes in loose potting soil

you have to clean it before you cook, and then again after you cook
same with after you use it for any digging activity
so why not just have a very light pan you can cook with without any time spent preparing it

also when you strip paint you need to coat it with something to prevent rust- because you dont want rust in your meal. I've stripped the paint off that cold steel shovel and put a new paint on it. It's a nice shovel for digging partly because it has higher carbon- which also means it needs a coat of something or it will rust by moisture exposure

You could use a trowel if you want to just make small holes. I've seen people try to sell hugely marked up garden trowels as "camping shovels" and other such nonsense before. They are small and light one handed tools so keep that in mind, but they do work well if you just want to dig for bugs, make a firepit or bury poop.

We use the same ones in Norwegian army, they are "ok", no more.
I prefer the older type, with the straight handle, they are more versatile.
Most e-tools annoy me with that slop that you never get completely rid of.
I'd much rather just carry a small shovel if I know I'll have to do any digging.

Don't cook in your shovel, that's a recipe for prion disease.
Normal cooking heat isn't guaranteed to kill all prions, and they can be found in soil.
You need a core temp over 70-something Celsius for some time to be safe, just cook your shit on a stick or carry a dedicated pot or pan of some sort for cooking.

Anyone have any suggestions for how to repair / reinfoce an E-tool holster in these spots? Pic related is not mine-- mine is not this worn out, athough it is starting to wear and fray in the same spots as this pic, which seems to be pretty common for these pouches.

My first thought was using some 2-part epoxy adhesive to seal up the fraying spots but I don't really know. My other best guess is to patch the spots up with some leather but that would really come down to how good my stitching is, and I'm not a tailor.

Hmm, that makes sense. I guess the fraying is because the outside of the pouch is being stressed by the contents, which makes it more vulnerable to scuffs and tears in those spots. A yard of 6.5 oz OCP costs about $10 shipped from eBay so I think I'll go that route and have a go at patching it.

Sometimes I take my USGI E-tool out of its pouch and just swing it around indoors for no reason other than because I love how the thing feels in my hand. I was so happy when I finally got one, I even bought a scrubbing brush that I keep in my bag just so I can keep it clean when I use it.
