For someone with no experience hiking mountains is it a good idea to take one of these courses? I know no one who is into this hobby. and I've always wanted to do it, I feel like the only way for me to get into it and gain the confidence to keep going forward is to have an experienced person show me the ropes. Would it be a good idea, bros?

Why not just start with an easier mountain though?

It's the first course I found and it's a few states away from where I live, I don't mind carrying gear around and stuff, it's just that I'm clueless on how to get into this stuff, so I feel like I'll just have to pay for a course to learn the basics.

You're gonna want to do a course regardless. Mountaineering (not hiking a tall hill, but actual mountaineering) is a dangerous sport. You need to know your knots, how to belay your partner, how to self-arrest a fall, how to spot crevasses, how to get your partner or yourself out of a crevasse, how to properly climb loose rock and steep ice, how to plan a route, how to predict the weather and many more things. Your life depends on these skills and this knowledge. A mountaineering course is a prerequisite for anyone who isn't a retard (and who won't get you killed) to want to join you on a climb. Even then, I suggest doing a few guided tours after your first course, before planning your first unguided climb.

It's an incredibly rewarding sport though.

Huh, I never knew that about US mountains. Here in Europe, most mountains that warrant the term "mountaineering" are covered in glaciers and snow fields near the peak. Otherwise, we simply ca it "hiking". Is true mountaineering more of a sport in Alaska and the Canadian Rockies?

I enjoy lush, deciduous forests as much as the next guy, but when you reach a saddle after hours of climbing ice and slippery rocks on the south face of a mountain, when you witness the majesty of a pure white snowfield on the north face leading up to the peak, those moments are incomparable.

Hike Galbraith for a few hours every few days with a light pack, for at-least a month, before taking the course though.

mount baker IS covered in glaciers. The Rockies extend into WA state--they're more inland though. The Cascades are a fork of the Rockies--there are several mountains that go from sea-level to over 3k meters.

Then wtf was the other guy blabbing about, then? I don't understand why anyone would advise someone to just strap on some crampons, take an ice axe and hike up a glacier. Unless they're trying to get someone killed. It can't be that they're pretending to be an experienced mountaineer, because everyone who has ever climbed a mountain knows they're full of shit.

It's worth it if you can use the skills to REGULARLY climb technical mountains.
If you're like me and live far away from any real mountains, and therefore could only possibly climb them 1-2x a year max, then I would use that money towards things you'd get more use out of (boats, bikes, skis, etc.)

Yes, especially if the more technical aspects (harnesses, ropes) are new to you. Mountaineering is no joke and a very different beast to hiking. That looks like a solid beginner course assuming the guides are good.

I recommend you do a bit of research about 2:1 and 3:1 pully systems in advance (that's the "z-pully" thing they talk about in your image). Crevasse rescue is a blast but if you're totally new to ropes a bit of reading in advance will help. Hopefully they'll let you jump in an actual crevasse. It's quite an experience, and not one you'll want to repeated in uncontrolled circumstances afterwards.

If it’s a mountain that needs a guide you should just pay a guide service to hike it and they will give you this training plus take you up there. If it’s not a mountain that requires real mountaineering skills just do it

A 6 day course lets you pra tice way more with rope techniques, glacier techniques, rock climbing, crevasse rescue and let's you climb several peaks in 1 week while getting feedback on everything you do. You learn WAY more taking a course.
