If it's a crop farm, forget about it unless it's harvest season. Simply not enough work to be done until then. Dairy/meat farms are better for constant work available but in my experience are less approachable since there's all the fencing.
If you speak Spanish, you might try your luck with the Mexican laborers instead of just the farmers, like Kerouac did.
In general I'd expect you to get turned away 90% of the time, and I can't blame the farmers. Things have gotten so bad in the US you can't be sure if a traveler is actually there to work and sleep or to murder you or steal anything not tied down. We let our insane, psychotic people roam the streets thanks to liberal kindness, instead of locking them in sanitariums forever where they belong.
