Tackle boxes are outdated and yes made poorly. If you need to organize tackle then high quality tackle trays like JDM Daiwa trays or Bass Mafia are the best. Otherwise just do what I do and throw all your bags into different ziplocks and throw the ziplocks into a back pack.

As much as I hate walking around wearing stuff with trendy brand logos on it, I got the salty crew rocks and docks hip bag and have been really happy with it. I can fit two lure cases in the main compartment and my smaller terminal tackle case + a few bags of plastics in the front. I stay pretty mobile when shore fishing so I have 1-2 trays paired to a rod and keep them all in the back of my car with the rods stowed in a rooftop box at all timea.

I have a couple of boat boxes that are basically a rack of size 3700 or 3750 Plano trays and a top compartment for bagged plastics or tools, and I've got a bag that holds a trio of Plano 3500s that I use for hiking and canoing. A protip, especially when you are keeping bare hooks in something like this: super glue a shitty fridge magnet strip to one side of the tray compartment. It'll keep your hooks put if you bump the tray while it's open.

I love yozuri hybrid 6lb. Its perfect for steelhead.

I agree on the floating part and i fin sensitivity a bit better too. You can use mono to perfectly cast a jig ie 1/32nd oz and the jig drops perfectly vertical in the river while the line floats on the surface, i love it for that. You can target log jams and structure really strategically like that.

For bass? Tacklewarehouse pretty undisputedly. Multispecies I am yet to find one that covers all the bases. If you are a JDMfag then The Hookup Tackle is the best for JDM stuff.

you would very much like fishing streamers on a floating fly line. you basically use the line as a 30 foot long bobber. buy a 7 or 8 weight and use it for steelhead, bass, pike, and carp

Metal lures are probably best repainted with powder paint. Check out Jann's Netcraft for that sort of thing. It's a process, so you'll probably have to buy some tools.

What kind of size bass are you normally going for and what size of baits are you using? I think the hook should be enough hook, if it's appropriate for your bait.

I use 4s and 6s for perch, crappies, and walleyes, and they catch the bass that decide to swipe at the baits just fine, but when I'm actually bass fishing I use bigger baits and bigger hooks (typically 2s or 0s)

Decent sized, anywhere from 2lb to 5lb. A #2 just feels so damn small and easy to bend out when compared to thick gauge 3/0-5/0 for creature baits.

I agree that it makes fish hold on longer, but I've never felt like it was that crucial for my bass fishing. Where I fish, bass tend to hook themselves smashing lures. But the scent helps give you time to notice more subtle bites, like walleyes, perch, etc.

Bass hunt based on sight and sound/vibration. The scent won’t make them strike any faster, but a scented soft bait has a better chance of getting hit a second time if you don’t get a hook set on the first bite.

I wouldn't totally count out scent. While wading I have watched smallmouth pass by my dropshot worm, only to get down current of it and then smell the maxscent and come back to eat it immediately. Granted, if there is anything I have learned after all the tournaments and days out on the water it is that some days they will eat a literal rock with hooks attached and others they will reject you simply because your jerkbait is the wrong shade of gray. I think fish are just autistic.

I don't know if scent works at all the way it was originally intended, but adding scent to a softbait swimbait helps with hook ups. Some scents act as a lubricant on the softbait, making it easier to slide out of the fish's mouth and onto the hook itself. Swimbait Underground's slick gel is used mostly to lube up the softbait, but it has that strong ass garlic scent to it as well.

It's bad for hooksetting but good for shock absorption which is mostly relevantfor cery largefish as the length ofmono you might have out while bass fishing is fairly neglible, which is why you see people fishing for pelagic like tuna where you might end up with 200 or more yards of line in the water they use hollowness braid or straight braid with a topshot of mono which provides some amount of shock absorption as well as somewhere for the angler to grab without having the low diameter braid cut their hand off

When fishing braid line on a casting reel, do you really need some kind of backing line to get it started? I've seen recommendations to start with a mono backing for a few feet, tie a line-to-line knot and then continue with braid.

Saw a dude grab onto some mono once. Would have been fine except for one thing - big o' salmon was ripping it out at light speed. Someone got the attention of mr. popo in the parking lot, who called the ambulance and put a wad of gauze on the mangled hand. By the time EMS loaded him up he was barely conscious, probably from the combination of bloodloss and shock (there was a LOT of fucking blood.) Was quite the entertainment for a then 12-ish year old me.

Elasticity helps when setting hooks in shallow water.
If you set a hook on a smallie in 30 feet of water you need to yank hard, but if you yank that hard in 4 feet of water having mono might be the difference between ripping the hook out of its mouth and not.
This is why I use a copoly leader when I go pond fishing. Copoly is mono coated in fluorocarbon to make it invisible.

So that looseness at the end happened when I tightened it up after the first two half hitches. I think I must have made slack when i did first hitch and it slid when i tightened up. I have braid coming from the rod and wrapped around my right pinky. Fluoro wrapped around left hand. Use three fingers and thumb on right hand for wrapping and tensioning and left hand pinches completed wraps in between and provides opposite side tension for the fluoro

(Australian here) Got a new shimano raider 7.8foot egi 3-6kg rod as a "general purpose" casting rod for casting soft plastics, hardbodies and other gear at stuff like trout and perch in lakes and flatties, salmon and bream near the shore. I know "egi" rods are marketed as squid rods (and i do intend to use it for squidding) but i dont see why it wouldnt be good for everything else. My only concern is it may be a bit too stiff for fishing lighter lures.
Thoughts? Im giving it a go today with some spinners and plastics at a stocked lake full of trout and perch.

Inshore squid fishing isn't really a thing here afaik, so we prolly won't be much help unless there's another aus lurking. The only squidding I know they do around here is jigging them vertically, mostly for bait on heavier line.

I think the only real digference between an "egi" rod and a regular rod is the bottom guide is smaller and closer to the blank to aid in casting, and the tip is a bit stonger to absorb the pulses from a fighting squid (but feeling the rodtip of the egi compared to some shorter estuary rods I have i cant feel much difference). Depends on the tackle. If you're using a big heavy cover jig with a hook that have a very heavy wire gauge you gotta swing your hips into the hookset to ensure it goes through. If you're using a tiny ned rig then a powerful hookset will literally bend the hook straight and lose the fish. For light wire Ned hooks you just reel down on the fish and let the hook do the work.

Should be fine with the lighter line. The extra length of the rod should compensate for the stiffness when fishing light lures.

In my opinion you should consider getting a slightly shorter, lighter rod in future (maybe a 7ft 2-4 or 1-3 kg) and use your 6lb line setup on this. A shorter rod is much more manouverable and easier to cast around obstacles like trees on the bank. Which is pretty much essential for spinning for trout in rivers, and is handy on a lot of lakes or even fishing for bream around structure.

Once you get the lighter shorter rod, upgrade the line on egi rod to 10-15 lb braid. This will be better suited to chucking heavier soft plastic jig heads for flatties, or metal slices to salmon. With a 7'8" rod with 12 lb braid you should be able to spin with metal lures from the beach or rocks if you want to give that a try as well.

I've used natural red copper spoon for pike with good success, lots of weed but it plops right through them. I've had a good 1m pike follow the spoon almost to the shore where it suddenly striked, almost shit my pants as I was like 15, maybe 16 and it was my first time getting a pike to bite. Didn't fight for long since with that panic movement I also yanked it out of the water to land in my lap.

Back to your Ripstop, I don't see much reason for the deep variant, the motion or the motion-stop action of the bait is for mostly horizontal movement. The deep paddle will always force it to go downwards, maybe an X-rap flat deep or Shad deep might be better. Or a regular Ripstop with a weight some 10-20 cm on the leader to get it to your desired depth then crank and jerk it back up
I don't really trust deep paddle lures because I've lost too many due to embedding it into the bed and breaking the line trying to pry it out of the mud.

The gear american bass fisherman use looks completely ridiculous to me. Guys using 50lb braid and a 20lb rated rod to skull drag a 2lb largemouth over the surface of the water back to the boat, and occasionally a 4-5lb fish putting up a 30 second struggle. Meanwhile in Australia people are using equivalent tackle to pull 100lb+ Murray Cod or Barramundi out of timber. Even the 'light' bass tackle they use is often 16lb fluorocarbon mainline, which would probably be up to the task of stopping pike/musky/catfish.

If you dont know anything about fishing, id say go down to a tackle shop, find a staff member and ask them questions. Ask them whats the basic stuff youd need to catch fish from a pier. Ask them about good fishing spots in the area, what bait to use, what fish you can catch etc. Youd be suprised how helpful they can be, just dont let them sell you really expensive combos and gear. Start with the basics.
Each state, country etc have their own regulations for size and bag limits and it can all be found online pretty easy.

Also, stay away from telescopic rods if possible. They tend to break easily and dont last long with use. Get a 2 or 3 piece rod, they fit in the back seat of a car fine.

Just make sure you get a rod, reel and line suited for the type of fishing you are going to be doing. ie. the fish you want to catch. Line is an important choice. There is fucktons of variety and it also depends on what what type of fishing you are doing and can be really confusing if you dont know what you need. You dont need to be using 50lb braid when your only chasing table fish at the shore. Monofilamemt line can be high stretch, low stretch, supple, low "memory" etc etc. Braid can be even more complex. Find out what fish can be caught and set yourself up around that.

Most bass fishers use memecasters and thin braid on memecasters is fucky because the line digs into the spool and harder to untangle birdsnest/backlash. Bass aren't picky when it comes to lines compared to trout who area lot more picky. Bass are hyperagressive and will eat/attack almost anything.

Unless you are considering a Shimano Sienna as a 'mid range' reel or something I would have thought a Sedona/Nasci should price out pretty similar to an SLX baitcster.

If it is a soft plastic with a hook slot, you want the hook to fit within the hook slot (duh), if it is a grub or paddletail you want the hook to emerge towards the back of the lure, but not far enough that it impedes the action.

Aside from that it is largely personal preference. Larger hooks (provided your target can fit it in their mouth) are a little harder to set, but are stronger than smaller hooks.

Even in Canada reels from the same line are the same price (ex. tatula spinning and casting). Similar quality baitcasting reels are +/- 10-20$ compared to spinning reels from different brands. That difference is mostly from brand tax. I don't know what country he's from but it sounds awful.

Shining a light can work but isnt the best way. Freezing it at -20c for a week is the safest option for raw fish. If you have a better freezer that goes below -35c all you need is 15 hours. Some people say it ruins the texture but you can fix that by sprinkling the fish filet/slab with salt and sugar, let sit at room temp for 20mins then rinse in ice water. I've done it with lake trout, its pretty good.

You forget the fact that due to higher gear ratios on casters, you can get more IPT on your retrieve than on a spinning reel without worrying about the added weight from having to upsize your spool size in order to compensate. Depending on the technique you may prefer one over the other. Also, People that bitch about backlashes on casters act like wind knotting isn't a thing with spinning gear. Both have advantages over the other in certain aspects and both have flaws. Just learn to use it all and be happy that you're fishing instead of slaving away. Tight lines.

Left hand retrieve reels are generally the same price.

Right hand retrieve makes sense if you're using a belt and the rail so you fight with the reel instead of the rod, but for inshore and freshwater, I buy left hand retrieve.

Easiest way to get flash freeze temps at home is to just use dry ice in a cheap foam cooler and put the fish in parchment paper in a tin can. It's ~-100c.

I haven't done it, but I read about dissolving dry ice in 99% rubbing alcohol and then dipping the vacuum sealed fish in it. Even if you aren't using it for sushi flash freezing is better for the meat than normal freezing. I believe it's because it freezes before the ice crystals are able to grow and damage the meat.

Depends on how good your cooler is and your thermal mass of dry ice to thermal mass of food ratio. A good cooler will keep dry ice just as long as it will keep regular ice, but putting food in dry ice consumes it faster than regular ice, because not only do you need to reduce the temperature even further (requiring the diffusion of more heat) but because dry ice has less thermal mass than water. If you're going to be using dry ice for a long fishing trip, the thing to do is deep freeze a couple blocks of water ice. (I make two blocks that each consume about a sixth of my cooler capacity) and then a week before we leave, I'll fill my cooler with dry ice and put these blocks in there. By the time we're ready to leave, the water ice ballast has reached the -100C equilibrium temp with the dry ice and then you arrange the cooler with the water ice dividing the cooler into thirds. Put a plank of 15 mm styrofoam on top of the water ice and one of the dry ice sides, top off your dry ice at the last possible stop that sells it, and use the other side for storing your catch. I've had rotomolded cooler setup like this keep fish hard frozen for 11 days, despite the fact that the cooler was getting opened every evening to have fish added to it from day 2-9. We were putting filets in gallon ziplocks with just enough barely salted water for us to squeeze all the air out, and it all kept beautifully. 3 guys on the trip and we were saving 1-2 fish each per day, about half the cooler was full of fish by the end.

We did do one laker sashimi style after 24 hours in the box about half way through. It was excellent.

I completely disagree. There is very little coordination required to wind with your non-dominant hand. There is far more coordination involved in controlling the rod to work a lure, or fight a fish. Plus for fishing streams and certain lures above weedbeds it is handy to be able to start retrieving immediately after your lure hits the water. This is much easier to do if your non-dominant hand is on the reel.

If you're talking inline singles on jerkbaits and the like you can find charts with equivalent sizes. Belly hooks should be put on with the point facing forward and the rear with the point facing back.

These are pretty general though, if you're reducing the number of hooks you can bump up a size. My LC 110's for example came with 3 #4 trebles and I replaced all of them with 2 1/0 inline singles.

You can try one hook and test the action where you can see it, but good hardbaits are balanced to a certain hook weight. On my jerkbaits for the surf I use two singles to cut down on how much salad they snag, but on my yellowtail and tuna baits I use a single on the back since usually that hookup is from a fish gulping it from behind, but I keep a treble on the belly to increase the chance of a hookup from a fish hitting them center mass.

If you're in freshwater maybe trout are the only species that would care.
For bass presentation will always be more important than color.
Color just amplifies a good presentation, but bad presentation with a good color still gets no bites.

I am distinctly jealous of the gorgeous imitations that flyfags get to use.
Does having such a heavy-gauge hook affect the fly a lot? Can it act as a keep to keep it upright? Is a streamer twisting in the water and causing line twist at all a concern?

Hook gauge affects sink rate, not much else. You don't want to be using a sinking line alongside a fly that barely sinks a foot in 5 seconds

Hook weight is mostly to make the fly sink more but it does also keel the fly (or make the fly harder to keel hook point up)
And having a beefy hook while fishing for big game can also be an advantage

Depending on those factors and materials chosen you can give the fly a different action. Yes, streamers twisting in the water is a problem for fly lines. Twisting ruins the coating which makes the line cast worse and shortens its lifespan.
