Gentlemen, I was given a $50 gift card to R.E.I. for Christmas.
I already have a decent pack, boots, bedroll, poles, camp stove, knife, hatchet, etc.
What should I pick up that I have probably forgotten?

I got a 80€ amazon gift card and I intend to use it to buy a magnet fishing "kit" (magnet+rope), as I want to try a new hobby and a good binocular.
Do you have any suggestion on which brands for both item I should avoid and which I should look into instead?

It is. You can find pretty interesting stuff (you'd be surprised in learning what people throw in rivers and lakes) and even if you only get junk you are still helping nature in reducing pollution, I think it's a neat little hobby

They have good REI brand socks for hiking. Regular socks are cheap and the seams are wrong. Hiking socks are smooth, thicker and better for wearing inside a shoe or boot. Buy one pair to try. Thank me later.

Huh, I haven't seen these double sided ones. The foil blankets I'm used to are the paper thin kind that tear if you look at them too hard and you can't even fold back up after using once without getting holes.
Are there ones out there actually tough enough to use as a ground sheet or is it a meme?

I made a thread about binoculars awhile back here as I was gonna go whale watching and wanted something cheap. Of course the autists were trying to point me in the direction of shit that was several hundred bucks and more.

Ended up getting a pair of Bushnell compact binoculars off amazon. I know the Bushnell name from shooting optics and trusted it. Have only used them a few times but no complaints.

I've had that Coghlin's and SOL in my kit for years. They add 7-10' to the inside air temp in the tent. Put it shiny side up, on the ground as a ground sheet, with your tent and sleep system over top. Highly recommended.
