I'm thinking of walking from my home in southern Sweden to Rome sometime this year. Have any /out/ists walked any of the E-paths (I'm thinking of either the E1 or E10) and know what to expect?
Will I have to walk most of the way on asphalt?
Does the gestapo and their swiss, czech, austrian and italian counterparts care about people camping in the woods?

You'll be walking through some of the most developed regions in the continent, what do you think anon? Following that trail north rather than south would probably be a better /out/ trip but I recon going to Rome will be a proper adventure, possibility to meet new people and more epic overall.

Swiss autism will probably get you in trouble if you camp somewhere not allowed.
Either way good luck with your project, would be pure gold if you managed to finish it and you would make /out/ proud. Cheers brother.

There aren't really any such paths. They're just random lines on a map, but there is no one path. I lived on the line on the Baltic coast line and there sure as fuck isn't some kind of a trail. You can walk by the beach (which is broken up by any decent sized river and docks) or go through towns.

Can only speak for germany.
-In forests it's mostly gravel, on fields gravel or asphalt (or concrete, sometimes). The closer to big cities or populated areas, the more paved roads. Not sure about the E-routes, I have a feeling it will be more paved than some route you just find yourself
Gestapo will shoot you for being a swede of unclear arianicity. Local police will never notice you or at best tell you to move on. Unless you act like you're in the swedish wilderness, in which case you get several charges for open fire, wild camping, destruction of private property etc. Leave no trace, use a bivvy bag or tarp (skirts the edges of the law against camping) and you should be good.

No open fire in forests except with special permit, no open fire on private property (that is basically everything) except with permission of the owner. Fire is allowed in designated fire places, which are rather common in areas with tourism or high population density. You can find them on open street map for example

Strictly speaking a camp stove is also open fire, but I hear that in practice they are tolerated. But there's more than a few people who want to make their own wood fire - and they can, on designated fire places.

Since it's an euro thread I'll ask here, where can one find some info about lithuanian forests (or any small EU country, for that matter)? Reading up on laws and all that is easy enough but finding any orienteering maps or worthwhile paths to take is almost imposible – mostly due to language barrier.

I'm from Latvia, but my advice might be useful if you do the Baltic part.

You can camp in any forest freely as long as there is no signage stating that you are not allowed to or it doesn't look like someone's back yard. If you are asked to leave you must leave. No fires allowed (very strict rule, dry pine forests in summer burn like hay) from April to October. All of seacoast can be freely used for camping.

There's enough forest to sleep safely even if there were draconian laws against it (thankfully they are great for a EU country). Our countries have very low population density, so much of the country outside of the capital are 50k towns and small villages with a lot of forest inbetween. You will never be truly far away from civilization, but it will feel very empty. During the summer beaches have a lot of people, but it is very easy to find an empty beach even during peak summer. For example I used to live in a small sea side village and I had a more or less private beach all summer. Most people will just go to the main access point while there are huge sandy beaches almost everywhere along the coast. They are only broken up by rivers and docks, so you can mostly walk by the sea coast all throughout Latvian sea outline without breaking off.

tried sleeping in one forest and got woken up by footsteps at 1AM by someone walking near. granted I wasn't very deep, but still it feels like all forests are few meters from civilization and the ones that aren't are filled with local niggers making moonshine.

Didn't know you can camp by the beach actually, gonna take that into consideration.
Do baltic coutries' forest administrations (or however it's called) have any maps available online? For example in Poland you can find a quite detailed map of any forest if you just google "[place name] forest managment" (although only in polish). I was wondering if you guys have something like that and I'm just to retarded to find it or is it a futile effort?

Number one rule in Germany is don't be an asshole. Don't try camping in protected zones of national parks and you will be good. Don't leave trash, dig a firehole and have a small bottle of Jägermeister to give away to hunters or the like. It is not that hard.

In Austria you can get problems if you camp illegaly and meet the wrong landowner/hunter. Very few would call the police.

But if you just ask when passing by a farm probably 95% will happily allow you to camp. Most only have a problem with people that dont respect that its someone else's property.
In deep nature nobody cares but keep the fire small and use a layer of rocks underneath! when you are in the woods so the fire doesnt burn into the soil.
Fire is a bit of an issue...no landowner wants it, also its illegal. Maby buy a bushbox or use a gasstove.

E4 goes through the National Blue trail in Hungary, it has stamps, an official notebook with maps and a badge if you complete it. You only have to follow one marking throughout the entire route. I'm not sure about the rest, but I heard the Austrian/German part of E4 is also easy to follow.

Mind you at several points the same marking will go off on parallel routes especially deeper into the mountains so being familiar with a map or even bringing a GPS is recommended. The northern parts have no cell phone reception so phone GPS don't help you much there.

Börzsöny, Mátra, Bükk and Zemplén areas. Without cell reception phone gps are very inaccurate and drift massively and can send you off in the wrong direction. If you are familiar with paper maps and compass and somewhat familiar with the area it is no problem but for someone who comes from abroad having a proper GPS is recommended. You might not use it a lot but when you need it you NEED it.
There are always dumb tourists falling into ravines and hidden water sinks who think their phone can do the thinking for them (it doesn't)

Also if there are paths, the markings can vary a lot. I had a good map so it wasnt a problem for me but some folk whined about bad markings on that particular path. Its an old system and not the most scenery-rich stuff. Therefore might not be popular. Good and bad with that.

Current smartphones have good enough GPS to pinpoint your location within 10m. I'm unfamiliar with those areas though I would understand phones getting confused by reflections from mountains and other high terrain.

Nope. Take advice from someone with experience. Once reception goes off you lose multiple correction factors. Standalone GPS exist for a good reason, though most of Blue Tour can be navigated by a map alone. Until it doesn't.

I believe you, it's just that I'm curious about the technological aspect. As someone who doesn't even have Google services installed, my only location source is GPS, which is easily confirmed by the fact that my phone doesn't show location indoors, while regular Androids do.
From my experience the GPS still functions perfectly fine, definitely not drifting hundreds of meters. Even thru my window it can hear 30 sats from GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and Beidou, and it's currently locked on to 13. There is absolutely no way it could go off by a hundred meters in this case, unless as I said there are some kind of reflection from high terrain, which doesn't exist in my flatland country, so I never tested it.

Mind you, the atmospheric correction data is mostly distributed by radio or internet, by subscription and involves operating a few ground stations for reference. Costs an arm and a leg, most standalone GPS (good ones at least) can use it and it is how geologic surveyors can pinpoint to a cm

Most standalone GPS can calculate corrections from the new GPS signals on their own due to the split frequency, they only need some time to collect enough data. Takes usually 10-30min to get the highest accuracy depending on terrain and latitude.
Not as accurate as the reference stations based one but gets pretty accurate. Phones don't do this.

All GPS signals contain correction data in a time value, the GPS unit can calculate how much the signal slowed down from 3 different frequencies, it can adjust it's accuracy due to this. It is not a direct correction and no references for known surface points so not as accurate as the subscription based one but it can be done with lots of calculations and data collecting over time.
I don't know or care about those GPSMAP things, I just said phone GPS is not accurate enough for hiking without cell reception and told you why since you asked.

tent is a tent and bivy is sausage skin that you slip your sleeping bag into so it wont breath at all and traps all the condension in while keeping all the rain and snow out
tents may break some rules in some places but bivvies don´t count as shelters same as hobo stoves or gas burners don´t count as campfires
