Recurve bow hunting

Deciding to move away from compound to something more traditional. Recurve looks to be the way to go. Is a takedown style bow better for any reason other than being able to swap draw weights? Also recommendations on brands/models?

The shorter the bow the easier it is to use innawoods. Try to find something mongol-ish.

portability and swapping draw weights, which you may want to do if you want to gradually move up in weight. you might not need to do that since you're an experienced archer and i'm sure shooting compound trains the right muscles to some degree. keep in mind though that a 40# draw feels very fucking different when you gotta hold it all while aiming and making adjustments. i started with a samick sage which a lot of people recommend, although you'll probably want to change the string it comes with to a fast flight.

I’ve been checking out the Sage. I love the Fred Bear Grizzly but I think a sammick is the right call for just starting out. I’ll buy a nicer bow later. I agree, compound is not my thing. Thanks!

I think you should have a compound bow or crossbow for taking deer until you're able to take them with a recurve bow or longbow.
I own both. Hunted compound bow for several years, still not ready to take deer confidently with the recurve from a stand.
My kids, however, are not allowed to own compound bows. They have to learn the right way. From the start. No bad habits like I'm learning to break.
I actually got a recurve crossbow last year while I slowly get better at traditional archery. It's fucking awesome. A rifle that shoots arrows. Total bullshit lmfao.
If you're going to cheat, cheat all the way.

What bad habits are those? I hunt whitetail with rifle but want to get into bow hunting, and honestly the traditional method is compelling to me. Just curious what bad habits form from using compound.

One I notice a lot is people not drawing the bow correctly. Because all the weight is front-loaded and people overestimate themselves, they're fighting to reach the let off and aren't able to control the direction of the bow.

I consider technology assisted shit like the compound bow to be a bad habit. Yes I realize I posted a pic of me with a crossbow. I fully acknowledge that it's bullshit. It's for 'in the meantime' while I get proficient on the recurve.
The recurve is unreliable, fragile and not made to last.
A wood/wood composite recurve bow is a lifetime investment. It's how game has been hunted for thousands of years. It's a direct connection to our ancestors and it's more difficult and therefore more rewarding.

Recurves are not inconsistent, your form is. If your anchor point, back tension, and release were all the same every single time, I’d think you’d be amazed at the results one can produce. There’s a lot that goes into form. Compound, while able to produce better results faster and easier than a recurve, can also allow terrible form habits to accumulate. Just because somebody can use their arms to muscle through being overbowed, doesn’t mean they should. Archery is your skeleton and your back muscles. The use of a mechanical release likewise will mean you’re starting at zero when it comes to a finger release. Get a tab, not a glove, as it’s easier to learn a proper release. Then practice relaxing your hand until a plastic grocery bag full of whatever drops to the ground... don’t practice dropping it per se, just relaxing your hand until it drops. Best way I’ve ever heard it explained was to not let go, just refuse to continue allowing your fingers to hold the string back. Subtle movement, massive difference.

Shooting a compound bow and traditional bow is complitely different, it's like comparing a rifle and a shotgun. The main difference is that you don't hold or aim at all with a traditional bow, you just point at a right direction, draw and loose. It's more like throwing a dart or a javelin.

Both compound bows and trad bows are inherently inaccurate due to the nature of archery, but the degree to which they are inaccurate is vastly different. Larpers will tell you trad archery is the way to go and then post a god awful group they shot at 10 yards that would be comparable to a group I would shoot at 70yards. Do yourself a favor take the compound pill, esp. if you want to hunt.

Then “graduate” to compound when you can do that, but only really start and end with compound of meat in the freezer depends on you taking it and you can’t for some reason use a firearm.
