I visit national parks at least once a month. I have literally never paid an entry fee or camping fee, and I’ve never gotten in any trouble. At this point, if I were fined, the amount would be less than I’d have spent if I actually paid fees to begin with. The land is just as much mine as it is yours and theirs.

I don't think there is a fine. the bookings were just introduced when the gov't required social distancing so they could track how many people were using a given facility. i think bookings are just used to resolve disputes if the sites are all taken.

me and some friends booked a couple spots back in May and 2 other people were at the camping area and neither of them booked. rangers drove through in the evening and didn't stop to check any bookings, probably just checking capacity and routine rounds

in the usa many of the "public" campgrounds that have stupid fees are on the honor system, I simply don't put money in the box. I'm usually up and out early before the ranger comes to check the box anyway.

I'm on the fence with this.
On one hand, pretty sure charging me to access land my compulsory taxes apparently go to maintain is some peak Jewage.
On the other hand, idk maybe that money goes to cleanup crews, which are needed because people are fucking disgusting and in many cases literally sub human.
It's kinda fucked. I think if you don't leave money, you need to clean up. Or fix something that's broken.
