Yep it's a heavily wooded area. Tall poles not really, but I imagine there will be a supply of strong branches that can do the job

Have a square tarp. Have used mostly Aframes and tetra tents. Although I did have cause to use an elongated pyramid and a star tent.

Seems to me the opposite would be true. That they're great for fall and winter but not as good for spring and summer. Unless you live in some weird place where there are no mosquitos and bugs.

When I was a teenager my sleep away camp would take us for a 6 day hike on the Appalachian trail from NJ to PA, we used the A frame method but with 4 tarps as we slept 4 teens to a tent and carried 1 per person. 2 tarps for the slants, 1 tarp for the ground, and 1 tarp as a rain shield draped over the slants. It was efficient and quick to set up, but could definitely be achieved with 2 tarps, one like shown in your pic, and 1 for a ground layer

Mice are a potential health problem because they shit and piss constantly and can transmit disease to you if they get into your food or water.

When my friend was homeless and had to live in the woods through winter the setup was basically the bottom right one with another tarp over it to create walls and prevent sparks from the fire from creating leaks. With the burn barrel going next to it it was like being inside in the heat when it was -12F with lake effect snow dumping on us.

When I was conscript we had bivvys and I used lean to method myself, easy to setup, fast to pack up when shit hit the fan or I had to go to patrol. Some people used arrowhead too.

A large mosquito net coupled with a tarp/poncho eliminates this. Just need 2 sticks,4 small rocks, and some 550 cord. They used to teach it in jungle warfare center in Panama. Also keeps out vampire bats, rats, and small monkeys.

Guys, I really can't decide if I should get a tarp or not.

The main reason why I want one is that there's lots of space inside to sit up and cook if you make a pyramid tent. Peak comfy especially in rain. My tent's vestibule is too tiny to do stuff in so I use my tent for sleeping only.

On the other hand I don't want to deal with bugs and critters that crawl into my tarp tent. There are also some nasty slugs here that crawl under mats and on stuff that has condensation on them, like bottles. A separate bugnet seems like more hassle than it's worth, rather bring a tent then.

I'm thinking of maybe buying a smaller and lighter tarp than those 3x3 ones and setting it up infront of the tent for a sitting spot, but how would one set it up especially if there are no trees around? What size should the tarp be? Any specific recommendations?

You probably should buy a big tarp, so you can make a piramid tent and still have tarp left for a floor so there is way less bugs. Anyway a tarp is cheap af, there's no reason to not have one

I mean for sitting up a 9x5 makes a good pyramid. a silnylon would be okay and reasonably priced. If you are alright with a new tent, there's plenty of nonfreestanding options with big vestibules and you can deal with the inner as you wish.

Lot will work like an open pyramid or lean-to but what you'll need to deal with is anchoring. You might need some serious cordage to bury anchors in rock and a pole that was pretty sturdy of the wind is strong.
