Hey /b/rothers.

So I'm heading off to Thailand in 2 months for anywhere from 2-4 months. For the first month I'm living on an elephant sanctuary in the north and after that backpacking through the country. Places I wanna visit are Pai, Bangkok, Krabi and Kho Phangan from the full moon party. I've been advised to avoid Phuket as it's a lame tourist trap..

Anyone done the Thai trip? Any advice on places to go/things to do? Tips? Thai travel thread.

I lived in Chiang Mai for about 8 months and loved it. It's a little overrun with foreigners, but at least they're mostly friendly, scruffy backpackers rather than rich old men looking to fuck underage girls.

BKK is a fun city, but wore me down pretty quickly. I'd check out Khao San Road just because it's funny to watch people be idiots, but I wouldn't stay there. Definitely go to Chatuchak Market on a weekend, that was the highlight of my whole visit there. Pai is lovely, definitely recommend it if you want a mellow place with some pretty nature. Krabi's nice too, it's really beautiful in that area (Railay is the prettiest, but it's a very expensive place to stay). KPN is a hellhole; Full Moon Parties are pretty overrated. Expect tens of thousands of disgustingly drunk white folks in neon tank tops simultaneously vomiting, shitting, and fucking in shallow sea water (not exaggerating, this actually happens). A group of my friends went to one on New Year's last year and had all of their valuables stolen from their guesthouse. Koh Lanta is a nice alternative for island party times, I'd recommend it a lot higher.

At some point after you arrive, a man will approach you asking if you would like company.

Say yes, and tell him the age you prefer. You'll pay upfront and she will stay with you for the day. If she does not like you he will get you a different girl the same age. If she does like you, she will stay with you for the duration of your trip.

This is something the authorities know about and permit to occur because it accounts for a lot of their tourism.

The left is a hiker, not a backpacker. Backpacker is term used globally to describe someone living out of their backpack while travelling. Hiking, while seemingly the same, is actually more about the hiking than travelling.

You should really understand that the board is not homogenous and many of us like both backpacking through places like SE Asia and Trekking in places places like Nepal.

I have middleaged friends on fb who go to Thailand just for this. Its pretty disgusting (especially because its more fun and nearly just as easy to meet regular girls at bars and have sex with them for free). Or if you're a half decent person, meet them to travel with without paying an older man for a girl who will see none of the money.

I don't give a shit even if you have, which, by the way, you haven't. What little "/out/ cred" you can establish on this board goes right out the window when you can't even demonstrate basic competence with common terminology. I just saw some tripfag on /k/ claim that it would be easy to buy a full-auto AK once someone got their "class III license." Don't you bring that level of ignorance to /out/.

If you don't actually do any outdoors activities, that's fine. You're still welcome to stay here and talk about how you will do them eventually, as a newbie. But you're not welcome to pollute the board with make-believe fantasies that never happened and never will happen - I don't even know what would motivate someone to do this.

At least use a tripcode in the future so I can filter you.

My girlfriend and I were mostly living off of our savings in Chiang Mai. She was an unpaid intern for a Burmese women's organization, I was the center coordinator for a really cool photography gallery/documentary studio that had monthly exhibitions, film screenings twice a week, and a lot of other events with other organizations. Didn't get paid, but we lived for free on the top floor of the gallery. I made a little money on the side writing really shitty articles for some travel blogs (not recommended--this wasn't genuine travel writing, it was advertising gimmick shit). Also, I totally thought that this thread was on /trv/ when I responded to it. If you're looking for /out/door things to do in Thailand, there's a fair amount of stuff around Chiang Mai. One of my favorite spots is called Sticky Waterfall (pic related). It's a series of falls over some weirdass kind of stone that you can very easily walk up, even though they get quite steep in places. There are treks out of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Pai that take in pretty jungle areas and waterfalls and stuff, and stay overnight in villages. The villagers are accustomed to tourists and it's definitely well-trodden ground, but the people that live there legitimately do so in huts and live as simple farmers. There's also white water rafting out of Pai in the right season (water was too low when I visited), and really great snorkeling and scuba diving in the south. I didn't have the time or money to get scuba certified, but my girlfriend already had hers so she went in Koh Lanta and KPN and saw a ton of awesome stuff. I went on a day-long snorkeling trip near Koh Lanta (to Koh Rok, I think it was called--you go via speedboat and get further away from the majority of the tourists) and it was really wonderful. Also MASSIVE fucking monitor lizards chilling on the beach where we ate lunch, full on kimono dragon status.

All backpacking is hiking, but not all hiking is backpacking. The difference depends on the length of the trip. If you'd ever done these things, you'd know this. "Trekking" is a regional term invented by Britbongs, but not used outside of a handful of small countries, which is probably why the word is never seen on the international Internet. The use of the word "backpacking" to refer to travel through foreign countries is a minor usage some rich people might use from time to time, but is not just something you can do on the weekends. Find me one magazine using the word this way as the title, oh wait, you can't.

To disregard these facts is to shitpost knowingly.
