I work outside, and I'm looking at picking one up.
Are there any specific ones I should look at? Brands? Materials?
I've been eyeballing the Smartwool neck gaiter, but I'm entirely open to suggestions.

Don't get a thick one unless you really need it. I have a smaller one, called a buff, and it heats the hell out of my face. I had a larger one, and even doing some alpine skiing in >10 degrees Fahrenheit it was way too warm.

As good as a scarf, a bit more practical because it doesnt dangle from your neck which can lead to many problems if it gets stuck somewhere, especially near machinery and while climbing, but less versatile, as a scarf can be used to warp things or carry things.l, among other uses.

When picking one, same advice as scarves, look at the fabric, not the brand. It's just a basic piece of fabric, you can't really go wrong with this. Well, look at the stiches too, but they're usually good enough.

Wouldn't go skiing without one. If you start skiing while it's snowing, having any skin exposed at all can be painful. However, I don't wear them for just going around in the cold.

Can't help you, I don't live in area cold enough for snowmobiles. I use the buff for snowboarding and hiking, it's wind resistant but I can't say if something is better or if it's enough for snowmobile in cold areas.

My wife makes buffs. I've got a wool one and a synthetic spandex type one. Incredibly easy to make. I'll see if she wants to make a couple bucks and sell some to you guys if you are interested. This is a cotton one she made quickly, that I put on to be like a balacava.

serious? you can buy buffs everywhere here in the US. not a big fan, I've got hair that's a little lower than my shoulders that's pretty "silky" and the buff always just slides. never used one for warmth

Buy a neoprene one. Conventional cloth masks get soggy and lose effectiveness quickly; a thick neoprene mask will keep the wind off your mug and retain heat while maintaining its effectiveness. I've used a mid-sized mask when skiing for years, it's an absolute miracle. Pic related, similar model.

You can get ones with a neck gaiter extension too, for when it's seriously cold.

I have a very thin one called a Buff, they're quite popular among the outdoors crowd here in the UK, not sure about anywhere else but probably. It's so thin but it's pretty windproof and insulating, really happy with it and I'd recommend it. My other one is a polartech microfleece neck gaiter with a kind of built in hood. It's fuckin' toasty and if I use it any time other than rest stops in deepest Winter on a mountain I just overheat.
