So yeah I have decided to buy a wool blanket beacause all of the praise it gets here. I heard that the Arcturus Military Wool Blanket is good. Any recommendations?

I got the pendleton for myself for Christmas but haven't used it yet. looks comfy. a bit bulky but I only go car camping for now.

is it safe to let it be in direct contact with ground? I don't want to baby it but I also don't want to mistreat it. could it be used for a picnic blanket? I have queen size national park blanket.

also, poorfags hem-hawinig for years and years about getting a $250 (on sale) blanket. just buy it!

Just use keep shooting reviews to compare to coleman's surplus french blankets. It's good stuff. Haven't tried more expensive italian.

Mostly mutt surplus, but every year a couple armies are yeeting their wool blankets. There is a massive surplus auction in Arizona where there are mega warehouses that don't get a lot of mold due to the climate. That is where a majority of US suppliers get their yearly surplus from. Just keep an eye on the market. You want a high wool content, usually 80%+. The reproduction comes from India where they mix rubber and poo into the weave.
I wouldn't necessarily go camping with wool unless you are okay going with a much heavier weight, but i've got them loaded up at home.

The best of the best is the stuff the french trappers used. A hudson bay blanket, but they run expensive, even prized used since they can last a century. In my opinion, wool market has declined since 1970s probably due to fleece.
I've been to Pendleton and used to work in the area. A lot of their blankets are over rated. You can get manufacturer seconds pretty cheap at the store in Oregon.

The Harbor Freight blankets (which are actually 87% wool btw) are fine to keep in the trunk of your car for emergency or backup use. But if you want something you won't hate using, spend a few bucks more on literally any other blanket.

so usually I use a sleeping bag and borrow my dad's sleeping pad in conjunction with a bivy.

You don't need a canvas bedroll if you have a bivvy. A wool blanket is a fine addition to a sleeping bag, but I would wait for warm weather before you try ditching the bag altogether. And yes, you should buy your own sleeping pad, then invite your dad on an /out/ing with you.

Something like this might be good as a bedroll along with a wool blanket. Canvas roll with with a wool/cashmere liner. Dunno if it is wide enough so that you can sleep on it AND wrap the rest around yourself though. But if you can I suspect it could get quite toasty with a wool blanket.

Harbor Freight moving blankets have already been mentioned. Rural King usually has a few camping blankets in stock for a buck or two more than Harbor Freight (so around $13). And again, charities give blankets away for free, which is a legitimate option if $30 would break your pocketbook.

No, a wool blanket will help stave off hypothermia but it isn't very warm all by itself. There's a reason that "cowboy camping" involves keeping the fire going all night long. Though if you were cold in 50° with no wind, it's probably a thinner blanket.

Because I did the (likely) same thing as you and looked on Amazon a bunch until I found this quite interesting blanket, I'd say it was a good purchase. It's a VERY large wool blanket that I use for both indoor and /out/door. Excellent to cover the top of your bedsheets in winter or your sleeping bag elsewhere.
A second one a bought as a cheapo-throw-away camping choice was too small in my opinion, but of course that could be what you'd want in your pack.
TL;DR:
Seems pretty good, you probably also believe wool is quite the super-material and makes a nice camp-cosy/warmer in a pinch. Use if you're willing to sacrifice A LOT of space in your bug-out bag.

Ive had mil surplus blanket tier and this is much better. If you just need something to toss around for cheap then get a cheap one but if you have the extra 20 bucks or so go with this, its a nice quality blanket.
