1) potentially lethal plants that resemble edible plants are a lot rarer than the cultural zeitgeist seems to imply
2) you should develop skills for identifying certain plants over time, the main key thing in learning is to be very specific about it
3) when starting to eat a new plant, you should always start out eating it in low doses so that if you are allergic or if it is poisonous, you should be able to survive
it does seem like it would be much easier with an actual person to guide you and answer questions, but what isn't eh? I think it should be possible to learn on your own
