I'd like to have a collapsible fire pit that I can keep in the trunk of my car. Does anyone have one that they'd recommend? Will it make my car smell like a bonfire?

Besides, sometimes the ground is bad quality and makes fire starting harder. I wouldn't pack OP's image out with me, but for normie car-camping sure why not

I'll collect white ash for skinwalker and other spoops. Wet ground has never been an issue for me, seeing as I always build a small platform the fire will be started on.
Those collapsible ones are always shit, they tend to break easily unless you get the more high quality one that are usually way more expensive, they tend to need more even ground or risk of it tipping over.
The solid cylinder ones are better due to being one one piece, the walls tend to hold heat longer as well as radiate it more, less of a tip / trip hazard as well.

Get the largest steel or aluminum pot you can find at a second hand store.
Punch some holes in the bottom and quite a few going up the sides for air intake (less smokey).
When you are done with fire and empty out the ash let the pot cool.
Carry it double bagged so not as stinky

Get some scrap steel, find the means to cut the panels to size and build one origami style. Panels will lay flat in storage. Build a model out of cardboard first to test the structural integrity.

All kinds of steel are okay, assuming it's not an alloy. What you really need to watch out for is coatings, specifically galvanization. Zinc oxide fumes are really poisonous and even inhaling a small amount can make you sick. Make sure whatever steel you use doesn't have a coating on it.

Yes any metal you use must be Cured.
Usually means burning in a hot enough fire (like wood stacked around it mini-tipi style) for some time, maybe an hour or so.
This is to off-gas the metal. paint , chemicals, grease, etc get burned off and hopefully the metal becomes inert.
If its for food boil water in it for a half hr empty water, boil more water in it, empty, repeat until you are sure water has no longer carrying smells or tastes..
If you want maybe cut up a pot into smaller sections that will stack tight and flat.
A pot is good bc it was specifically made for fire and high heat.

I've seen "people" bring that in fest, I can understand why: It is all in one and lightweight for a single use (had some fun watching them try to ignite coal with a lighter). But OP pic seems bulky and fragile, better replace it with an old marmite. At least you can cover with the lid after use to avoid bonfire smell
